I would have though that these plants would have died off but appear to have survived is that normal?

sage and chives are perennial, parsley biennial. It lasts v usefully one winter, but will go to seed this summer, pretty early on. Eat it while you can! :)
I agree. Sage is perennial and tough, needs cutting back for fresh leaves.
Parsley mostly survives its first winter and provides masses of leaves before going to seed in early summer.
Chives go on for ever! All you need to do is occasionally separate them and replant further apart.
Coriander is surprisingly tough - mine died over this freezing winter, but seedlings are coming up all over the place from flowering last summer.

How far should i cut the sage back? I have just taken the top 4 inches off as it looked like old growth..
Am planning on getting the rest of my seeds sown sunday so by the time they grow i should be able to get into the garden again.
