Title: Pear Tree
Post by: noorie on February 27, 2011, 12:58:09
Can someone please advise me why the fruit turns black and fall of the pear tree, especially when they are young, and how I can cure it.

Many thanks

Pear midges... cure is tricky but removing as many as you can and keeping the soil under the tree tilled will greatly reduce the number...  :)

A quick google amd sounds like you have pear midge, some info here http://www.gardenseeker.com/plant_pests_problems/plant-pests/pear_midge.htm (http://www.gardenseeker.com/plant_pests_problems/plant-pests/pear_midge.htm)

Sounds like best method is to remove infected fruit, keep area around tree tidy, cut the grass short and keep it tilled over. Sounds a real pain to try and get rid of

Woops saddad beat me to it   :)

I put plastic underneath the tree to catch the blackened fruits as they dropped off and swept them up to stop them getting into the soil.  With a lot of work I did manage a few pears.  Also also put the plastic on ground when the flowers are opening to stop the beasts coming up out of the soil.  Apparently need to be careful not to leave it too long with small trees because roots can dry out.

In the end I got rid of the tree and now concentrate on apples.

If you got chickens let them free roam around the tree they'll help keep the number down too
