I found great list of companion plant pairings, I add my own nick names to them since figured like three sisters they might need catchy names to make them interesting.
Did not get try any of them due to finding the list in august. 2010 which was late try any of them.
two leaves and root : cabbage, lettuce, radish
two leaves: early cabbage, lettuce
two leaves and hot root : early cabbage,lettuce, horse radish
1 leaf and 1 red root : cabbage and beets
small leaf and red root :lettuce and beets
2 roots radish and carrots
red root and hot root: beets and horse radish
root and cold vine: radish and peas
2 roots and little leaf: parsnip,lettuce and radish
2 cold roots: turnip and radish
stinker and refresher: onions and celery
root and bunch: radish and celery
small leaf and bunch: lettuce and celery
high and low berries tomatoes and strawberries
hot vine and low berries: beans and strawberries
hot vine cool as cucumber :beans and cucumber
mbp: melons , beans and potato
B&R: beans and radish
high and low: corn and radish
cold leaf and cold root :spinach and parsnip

As for how to space the plant combination and timing of the planting of the combination in relation to each other for the greatest effect. your guess is as good as mine. Since no book I have read on companion planning.

I grew french beans in amongst the asparagus bed one year , after we had finished harvesting asparagus shoots . We had a good harvest of french beans and my thinking was that the nodules on the bean roots would feed the asparagus plants . It worked for me ! Debbie :)
