Title: Manure
Post by: JudithM on February 26, 2011, 10:24:45
Is cow manure or horse manure best for the allotment? My friend has horses so I could get plenty of that for free, would have to buy the cow manure.  ???

If you can get it for free then go for the horse manure - no point in paying for cow stuff really.
Just make sure it is well rotted!

If it's free go with the horse..... stable manure will probably need to be rotted down (just stack it in a heap for a year) you can use field tailings as they are.... I do and had my best beetroots, celeriac and spuds from it last year... just use loads.....

You are prone to import more weed to your garden with horse manure so the longer rotted the better

Goodd point, but they're generally annuals in my experience, you can hoe them out....

Get an old builders one ton bag, (the type they deliver sand in - they usually are blue) fill it with horse poo, plastic bags to cover - leave it all year, so if you start it now it will be ready for next year, then repeat - you will always have excellent manure!
