Title: Gardenia advice?
Post by: CotswoldLass on February 25, 2011, 10:05:02
I'd love to get a few gardenias as I love the scent but I hear they can be a bit tricky. Would have to grow in pots I think to get sun and the right soil. Advice anyone? Also how easy to find in the UK?

Thanks CLx

In a conservatory perhaps, beware of the perfume indoors they get too heady sometimes, but outside they would be a mission. I used to put mine out for a week or two in high summer but even this far south they did not like it. Even watering them sometimes put them in a sulk.

Thanks ACE, pity we don't have a conservatory......had a feeling it might not be straightforward! Might have to forget that idea then CLx

The exact same that I have ordered! How long have you had yours? Mine due to be delivery end of April - very good offer!

They'll have to live on the terrace but it is mottled shaded and sheltered. And in pots as our soil's not acid.  Can winter in neighbour's conservatory for the duration of serious weather, so we'll see how they get on.

Done a bit more research - trick seems to be ericaceous compost and only water with rain water as tap yellows the leaves....so excited about getting gardenias, have wanted them for years!
