what veg like manure and what doesn't?
also i have some that is rotting black in colour that you can still see straw bits on or
black crumbly stuff that just feels like compost that you buy in bags which is the best one to use
All plants like muck... roots will split/fork so avoid where you will grow parsnips, carrots and so on...
the composty stuff is best but most will tolerate the rougher stuff... ;D
Thing like salads don't need it...bit too rich and salad do well enough without.
But like Saddad said..apart from root crops..."feel free to spead it about"
For things like cucurbits (squashes, courgettes, gherkins, cucumbers etc) there's no such thing as too much.
Cabbages and most other brassicas prefer it if you don't manure the ground just before you plant but that's as much to do with them liking the soil a bit firmer as it is anything else....
YOu can divide manures into two sorts, ones that need stacking and rotting and ones that can be used fresh.
You can use horse field tailings fresh pretty much.... byt the tiem I get round to planting stuff out this year most of my main plot will have 6-8" on everywhere except where the carrots are going and where the garlic is. THe carrot bit might get last years tomato bed soil added, it was a mix of compost, topsoil and horse manure.
Nearly all the others need stacking for a few months at least, a year for preference, cow, goat, chicken (best used as a compost accelerator really, you'll rarely have enough of it to stack as a pile on its own unless you have a lot of chooks), pig might want two years cos it's hellish strong. Horse stable manure depends a bit on how often they muck them out, if the straw looks pretty clean then you might get away with it as a mulch, if it looks dirty, stack it a year, it's mostly down to how much urine is in there rather than poo though, too much and the ammonia will burn the plants... I'm going to try using some of the cleaner sort this year on some of my spuds as an experiment. I can get as much as I want for free and I think I have the space to do it plus a machine to do a lot of the heavy work for me....
