Title: Clematis Montana help?
Post by: CotswoldLass on February 21, 2011, 12:33:55
Hi all,

Have two Clems, one of which does very well, the other is rather thin. Should I prune them? If so when and how? Am not very sure at all..........

Thanks in advance,

CLx

There's an article in the March RHS magazine on clematis montana. If you are sure both of yours are montanas, it says "be diligent about pruning excessive old and new growth away, always immediately after flowering. All montanas flower on old wood; no excessive autumn or winter pruning can be done without losing some flowers in spring". it also recommends mulching 2 or 3 times through the growing season and adding bonemeal to the soil in autumn and a high-potash feed in early-mid spring.

Hope that helps?

Great help thanks Caroline, will leave the Montanas alone and feed/mulch.

After they flower you need to get the machete and flame thrower out...  ;D

That's reassuring Sparkly, admit ours have been left rather longer than that! One flowers prolifically, the other is, as I said, a bit weedy. Perhaps a feed will help............

Clematis are very greedy so it's definitely worth feeding now and up until mid June.   prune the vigorous one after flowering to renew flowering stems, especially low down on the plant.  Give the weedy one an instant tonic of liquid rose or tomato food as well as some slow release food and the mulching.
