Title: Golden Kiwis
Post by: galina on February 18, 2011, 22:43:56
I can't find the post now, but somebody was asking for Golden Kiwis.

Our local Lidl was selling 6 for £1 today.  They are from Italy not New Zealand.  A bit longer and narrower than normal green kiwi, the flesh is bright yellow and they taste very sweet.

I can't remember where mine came from but they tasted more like a sweet lemon than normal kiwis that have a recognisable sweet gooseberry taste.

Worth growing - I always prefer to grow flavours I can't buy - especially when they are cheap as normal kiwis.

Cheers.

These taste slightly different from green kiwis, but kiwi rather than sweet lemon.  What I forgot to say was that their skins are not fuzzy.  I ate one with skin on but it was somewhat  thick and leathery.  Peeling is better.

I have put some fresh seeds in the propagaton and will also cold stratify (if necessary) after the seeds have dried.

I've seen those in Asda and bought some few times too..and yes they are lovely..better than than the 'standard' green sort.
I find the green ones sometimes too 'tart'..my tastebuds tend to be bit on sensitive side ;D I don't know if it is age thing or not but 'back in days' a stick of rhubarb..raw..didn't seem to be problem..but there is no chance I would even try now :o

Aha - the gold ones I ate a few years ago were fuzzy-skinned (peachy?) rather than hairy but still nothing like the shiny edible skin of A.arguta.

They certainly had the odd shape in this webpage /www.zesprikiwi.com/goldkiwi.htm - maybe they were an earlier variant - or it could just be different growing conditions.

It's possible the breeders are avoiding the lemon taste somehow, since it will have bad assocations for some people (the same people who feel cold in a blue room probably).

I liked it, but then I love the fruit of Meyer's Lemon. I often put fresh lemon juice into cheap orange juice - the mix is still cheaper than the expensive stuff and I like it much better.

Cheers.

Vinlander,

thank you for the url and yes, these are different.  The shape is like a very fat cocktail sausage, nothing like the Zespri Gold Kiwi.  The flower end is not prominent.

The brand name is Kiwita Gold.  They list a variety name on the packet ' Jintao'.  Googling for Jintao found this page

The ones I bought are a little narrower than in the picture, more sausage shaped but this is the one.

If you are interested in a few seeds, pm me.
