just taken delivery of my new glasses, they feel very weird, like looking through a goldfish bowl. Anyone know if it gets better, I couldn't drive wearing them at the moment. They've told me to persevere with them for at least a fortnight. I've kept my old bi-focals for now, just wearing these indoors. Just as well there's a 30 day trial ;D
Hi Mal I've had mine for years now & wouldn't go back. I had 2 separate pairs & kept breaking them as they were on top of my head. I would give it a couple of weeks, wear them for short spells, gradually increasing the time.
I think they're brilliant! This is the second pair I've had. Mind you, I did get used to them fairly quickly. But it does take a bit to re-focus your eyes each time - I nearly fell over in the woods when I turned round quickly to throw a stick for one of the dogs!
Stick with them! They're much better than bifocals.
Manic I wore bifocals for years but then my boss about 15 years ago told me to have varifocals, she even paid for them!! took me about a week to get used to them but wouldn't have anything else now.

My next time at the opticians will be crunch time regarding bifocal, varifocal or separate reading glasses. How do varifocals work out with working on the computer? Going downstairs or down a hill etc.
Would appreciate any comments please.
I've worn varifocals for years and never had any problems. Give them a few days and I'm sure that you'll get used to them.
I had some varifocals but after 2 weeks I had to go and exchange them for two pair. They were ok whilst I was sitting watching tv and then glancing down to read something. It was when I tried to read something large that the lines went rounded. I also had trouble driving cos I coulldnt see clearly out of the sides. I did have the most expensive ones as well thinking that they would be ok. I now have one pair for reading and another pair for long and intermediate use.
I used to have to wear reading glasse to shop but now these are ok. I suppose its up to the individual. You might be ok with them
Persevere! I nearly gave up, but the optician was so patient and encouraging that, having tried to take them back to get my money back, I ended up trying again for another month, with total success. I kept feeling so nauseous, but she said that each time that happened to take them off for a few minutes until I felt better, then put them on again. That worked.
They do need to be adjusted properly though. Last year I wasn't seeing so clearly. Went back to Boots opt, who tested my sight, but never looked at how the glasses were sitting on my face - shame on them! I went to an optician in here in France who first of all took measurements, drew all over the lenses and put them back on, and said they weren't sitting properly. He adjusted them, I was able to see clearly, and no charge! I hadn't realised just how important this is with varifocals.
I've had varifocals for a few years. They were a revelation in choir practice: I could suddenly see both music and conductor ;) My eyes are still deteriorating though and I got a new prescription recently. The optician advised me to go with a larger 'reading' area in the lenses. I must say it took me a couple of weeks to get used to them but wouldn't go back now. I don't have any problems looking at a computer screen or walking up or down hills.
has anyone got varifocal contacts. I need them now but I need to be able to drive the kids to school so dont need loads of hassle
I have just got a new pair with a different range than the last ones, still getting used to them, but the first pair were a mission to get used to. Be careful on the stairs, I went @rse over breakfast time when I missed the step. It's a bit like the refraction in water.

...yeah, but that was as much a cider injury as a glasses one..... :D
Ive worn varifocals for some years now and the best bit of advice I had when I had my first pair was..........what ever you want to see point your nose at it. Dont move your eyes. Works a treat but still takes a week or so to get used to. Good luck.

I've had varifocals for years now and until recently had absolutely no problems with them. Now, I find I have to take them off when I use the computer or read. I'm due for an eye test soon so I'll mention it.
It's probably an age thing. ::)
Never had a problem with mine, took to them straight away and been wearing them for years.
I am due a change and I wonder if I will be able to pick a pair of the really modern ones now as they are all quite small.I was always advised not to go too small.
Betula, it will depend on your prescription. I tried really small glasses but after several attempts at using them took them back and ordered some bigger frames. I've had varifocals for years and love them, but apparently there are different quality (read more expensive) and I go for the top of the range.
Stick with them Mal :)
I've worn varifocals for years, takes me no more than a couple of hours each prescription change to get used to them ...I suspect though it's down to how you naturally move your head, I think us twitchy people take to them more naturally. A word of warning though - OH's first pair were impossible, turns out the optometrist had reversed some measurements, they were corrected free of charge though. Betula, I wear a modern children's frame and have no problems....
Just read 1066's post, I'd agree, you get what you pay for and nothing is worth more than seeing properly.
well, I wore them for a couple of hours then walked upstairs, boy did I feel giddy and sick ;D
anyway, left them off to go to mum in law's for her food run and now I've put them back on, I'll persevere with them, hope they work out as well as everyone says , cheers :)
Thank you everybody for advice.
I gather varifocals maybe take a little while to get used to, but are worth persevering with, and in the long run they are the way to go. I guess I can always have one pair varifocal and keep an ordinary distance vision pair to hand at least in the early stages.
Optician visit is due shortly.

Just to thank everybody again for all your comments. I have varis and haven't looked back! Love them. The first prescription did not work out and I had to go back, insist on another eye test, but the staff really helped get me the right prescription in the end. Did I say, I love my new specs?
Thanks for all the advice and encouragement.
