Title: Seed swap/talk in Pudsey, 15th Feb pm
Post by: SueK on February 14, 2011, 16:27:02
Hello all,
Just to say that I found out today that a new(ish) gardening/landshare group called Pudsey Land Share Enterprise (or PULSE for short) based in Pudsey is holding a talk on the history of allotmenting combined with a seed swap tomorrow at Pudsey library, 7.30 to 9.30.  Apparently there are refreshments provided (always a bonus!), free entry.  It is open to anyone who's interested.

I can't tell you much about the group other than the website is at http://pudseylse.wikispaces.com/ - but no doubt I can say a bit more after tomorrow! :)

Just passed it on to a friend who lives in Marsh (Uppertown area)  :)

Thought I'd already replied to this- not sure where it went! Just to say it's not far from me- will keep an eye on the website and will be interested to hear more although I can't get there tomorrow.

Well, it's possible that we were all there incognito, but I ventured over for the talk with a few envelopes of seeds and had quite an enjoyable evening overall, although - I must be honest - I felt like a bit of a lemon.  But I cannot complain as I came home with some achocha seeds (which do apparently grow outdoors in Pudsey) and a redcurrant cutting to go with my gooseberry bushes! :)  Not for me the "Sheffield parsnip", though.

As far as the organisers' overall aims were concerned, the emphasis seems to be on sustainable living and they have apparently had a few events over the last 12 months to that effect already, including a seed swap in the park, a wild food walk, etc.  Interests include promoting better use of produce - for some reason the subject of wine making kept cropping up  :) - and, given that they have some funding, looking to have beekeeping courses and set up some hives as a group.

The talk was very interesting and there were some heart-rending stories of what happened to people as they were thrown off their land during enclosure.  It put a new perspective on the industrial revolution.

The evening was only really marred by coming home and finding that my eldest had tried to spike his hair with vaseline - oh joy! :(

Well I went out on Friday to get a call mid meal from son (17) to say someone had put a brick through the front door window... (ie he was having a party without permission) I'd settle for the vaselined hair..  :-X

Adolescents, don't you just love 'em?! My friend from secondary school days told me her daughter had been sick in her bedroom (also having an illicit party). I had to remind her that her daughter was only following in a family tradition!!

Bit off topic I guess....

Well, yes, and the list of future events sounds promising too so it might be a good opportunity for me to get to know some of the other gardeners in Pudsey; a lot of the people there already knew each other from having allotments on the same site, whereas I'm still on a waiting list.

Incidentally, the villain of the piece, no 1 son, is all of 8 years old.  But it's nice to know we've got all this to come! ;D

PS  I'll get my revenge by taking them to a potato day on Saturday - can't wait! ;D
