Anyone up for the Cornykev spud challenge 2011 this year, rules to follow for the newbies and brummies. :-X ;D ;D ;D
yay, count us in ;D
Well, after my total disaster last year, I've got to give it a go! The weekend of my and Tonybloke's birthdays?
I believe that is the same weekend as my birthday too :-X So go on, count me in!!
Count me in. What are your weapon?
I was very pleased with my results last year. I was eating new pots much sooner than I would normally have expected. The challenge meant I gave them a little extra TLC. So yes I am deinintely up for the challenge.
depends what the challenge actually is - something new or the same boring thing ;D
Well, no idea what the challenge might be but I like spuds so count me in :o
How about a handicap if you're south of Hadrian's wall? ;D ;D
Ok Kev were up for it. Let us know when to plant them

Yes, I'm up for it even though I am neither new nor a brummie. ;D
Count me in then kev haven't got a clue what i'm doing ??? but count me in ;D
Scousers your first in again ;)
Here goes, it's just a bit of fun, so no knockers OK , its just a bit of fun
Planting time weekend of 19th/20th February
First earlies would be best but any spuds will do, I seem to remember Gwynnethmarys Kestrels coming up a treat
No planting inside greenhouses or polytunnels or under any electrical heat
The idea is to try and warm the soil now with blankets, fleece, carpets, cardboard, newspaper or anything that comes to mind
Plant straight into the ground or in pots, bags, tubs, buckits etc, covering with fleece, cloches or the like
Digging up time is the weekend of 4th/5th of June, Tonybloke and Trevor D and I can't find it but it may be 1066's Birthday
The idea is to have a meal for two of new spuds on a plate about golf ball size
So warm the soil, keep them coverred and watch out for them frosts
People who have raised beds will have an advantage but what can one do
I'm going to try about 4 or 5 rocket spuds, so if your new to this just use a few, repeat do not put all your earlies in and blame me when it all goes tits up, only put in what your prepared to lose
Did I mention it's only a bit of fun
Best of British
Cornykev
;D ;D ;D
:-* :-* :-*
Count me in ;D
hmmm hotbeds, black plastic, does polythene count as a greenhouse? I think not.........
Looking forward to new potatos already :)
Panic! was intending to buy mine tomorrow, will I be too late?
Would love to but unfortunately I'll be in Spain that weekend, where hopefully the ground won't be needing warming up ;)
Me too please x
I am working that weekend though, do I have special dispensation to plant the Friday or the Monday? ;)
May I join in.
Brummie and proud of it.
Maggie.

oh well im from "ahem" the royal (although it isnt really, shh!) town of sutton coldfield, not really part of birmingham, they just wanted our lovely park im sure... will hunt some seed spuds out and hope for the best... ;D
How could I refuse? LOL
right, home guard in potato bags it is, going to be a challenge, our very early spuds don't go into the tunnel until 27th ;D
Right, if its too coldy woldy for our Scottish contingent I'll allow one hot water bottle prior to planting
Not too late Poppy
Anyone on hols bung em in when you get back
If it's too boring 4 u Calendula then I'll allow u a single shiney windmill to put beside your planters
Did I metion the more Brummies the merrier
Only if your not too busy Tone. ;D ;D ;D
Would the lid on top of the bin warm the soil? Hope Oh doesn't notice I've pinched the bin and chuck the rubbish in it or the binmen empty it.
Oive only jurst nowticed the skit abowt us Brummies, What a flippin liberty.
C'mon you lot lets just show them suvveners what us brummies can do ;D

please don't mention wind ;D
however if you will allow a planter in the greenhouse (still standing) then I might just bother myself ;D but was just hoping that maybe you could've upped the challenge to, e.g., planting the same spud and checking results around the country cos otherwise I know exactly what the results will be for me :P
Hmmm - it will never work on my cold clay soil, even with prewarming. But what have we got to lose? I'm in :)
After last year's Swift debacle, I'll try again with Home Guard, never grown them before......oh, and lifting is the day before my birthday....
Ok then..................... I am Sparticus! :)
Oh.
???
Sorry.....:-[
Wrong forum.......... :P
I'm in!
Raised bed in the garden in North Wales..... I'll get it covered in summat as soon as I get me socks on. :)
Yes I will give it a go I have never grown earlys before Kev is one nil up in the rugby lets see if Whales can do any better in the spud challenge will grow in 2 potatoe sacks if that is ok could you please recommend a good seed please

Yup that's the nearest weekend to my Bday :) Think I'll try planting some in a pot / planter, my clay soil is so wet and cold at the mo....
Looking forward to my spuds ;D
I have been collecting a huge pile of horse poo over winter. I guess a couple of feet covered with a few feet of soil should be nicely warm by the time I get back from seeing mum. Plus I've got a couple of secret weapons from work that might help ;)
Thinking rocket as they've been chitting a little while now
Right.. spuds bought & that was ALL I bought at the garden centre - a major first!!
OK I will try. Have got some Pentland Javelin chitting, but have also got some Swift. Not sure which to try. I will use an old black dustbin that is full of home made compost. It is in the back garden, so I can put a warm blanket over it at night and look after it. Maybe a spare quilt too...
Last year we had a late frost, it got all my earlies at the allotment.
Haven't tried this before. Do we take photos or weigh the potatoes?
The royal connection goes back to Henry VIII, which is all right if you like dictators I suppose.
Im in ;D again
If u have clay soil try in pots, tubs or bags, I will be doing both again
Photos if u like and weighing is a good idea so u can check results against others ( that should keep Cal off my back 4 a while )
If u have never grown earlies then just get a 10 pack from the £ shop or wilkos RP, I'm going with Rocket, Swift is another fast grower ( I think there's one called Chariot its very sweet ) ;)
Poo is good, hmm secret weapons ???
Is that where the Winston spuds get their name from Robert ::)
Cal, Cal, cal where shall I start greenhouses are a no no
Getting everybody to buy the same spuds, :( now there's a challenge on it's own ::)
I think peeps want to buy the spuds they like and suit their needs
The whole point is it's a bit of fun and nice to see DIFFERENT spuds growing in different parts of the country under different conditions with different results, did I mention different at all ;)
Lets see the different ways people warm the soil, keep off the frosts and condition the soil
Once again it's a bit of fun, so don't plant too many, just what u can spare, and no NEGATIVITY, or the yellow card will be coming out. :-* :-* :-*
Thats about thirty runners so far and I forgot to say there is 15 weeks of growing time, so get that soil warmed sharpish, I've just done mine. ;D ;D ;D
sob :'(
I did mine in the greenhouse last year and you didn't ban me to the naughty step then so can I have my windmill please otherwise I'm not playing :P
and I'm using the sun to warm my soil, so there ;D
You cheated last year, :o right that's the windmill confiscated, come back at the end of the season and you can have it back, it's going in the naughty draw with Tones catapult and Borlotti's racket. ;D ;D ;D ;)
Ok, what's everyone's weapon of choice? Mine are Rocket from the Pound Shop. Let battle commence
Rocket from a similar source ... But with special weapons underneath and on the top ;)
I'm going to try a couple in the hot bed under a cloche, just to see the difference, if any ;D

corn on the cobblers to you then mate ;D my measley contribution then is going to ONE spud, in the ground warmed by the sun (none of this fancy soil warming stuff) and my spud of choice will be Arran Pilot which I am sure will do better than your Rockets to the moon :P so let battle commence, handbags at dawn duel ;D
Kev how about we have 2 competitions?
Your original plant early and harvest by the 5th of June and then the one that we talk about on the other forum where we try and grow the heaviest crop possible from one seed potato? I am going to use a builders half tonne bag for that competition ;D
That would give you one winner in June and then another winner in lets say end of August.
We are growing Pentland Javelin

:)
What other forum?
Maybe he means the Potato forum ???
http://growingpotatoes.co.uk/
Yes Tattieman, myself and a few others are having a competition on Tattiemans spud forum growing spuds in a builders bag, it started along the lines of the storey GG mention last year about growing a tonne of spuds if dug and spaced out correctly. :-\ :-\ :-\
:o you are a potato traitor moonlighting elsewhere ;D
I find the site very aPEELING. :P :P :P :P :P

I like to keep my EYE in you know Iain. :P :P :P :P :P
are you sprouting off again, Kev?
a chit off the old block?
Well, I'm growing Pentland Javelin as my first earlies this year. They're a bit of a late developer, but count me in anyway.
Let's see what we can all do.
Did we really plant them as early as 19th February last year. I remember it got very cold just after I planted them.
I have not put mine to chit yet - better get on with it. But the bed is dug over and the bottle cloches all ready. I also put a plastic milk bottle full of water between each plant.
Soil reasonably warm at the moment but looks like we may have a couple of cold nights next weeks so I will have to ensure it stays warm.
I hope you will be back to sound the starting gun.
ill have a go to...but its so cold in northumberland

Bottle cloches ??? a plastic milk bottle full of water between each one???
Why??Do I put the lid on the bottle of water? Won't it all run out??
Please explain I am new :-[
X CHAS
I think thatt you put a bottle cloche over the potato to keep the soil warm. The bottle of water between the plants is to do the same thing. The water in the bottle is supposed to warm during the day and let out its heat during the night. Left bottles of water in greenhouse over winter but with very limited success. However it was a particularly hard winter.
my only worry about that planting date is that the full moon is on the 18th? so it will be cold, more the seasonal cold anyway as it has been very mild for many of late - but we shall see - am sure we had a longer planting time period last year

Thank you another mystery solved! A lot of people on my site put coke bottles on sticks around their plants.Thought they were to scare the birds!! :)
X Chas
They probably are, but I don't think they're very effective. Dangling CD's are better. Best of all is netting, and coke bottles are good here, to stop the netting sliding down the sticks.
Or Shotguns. :P :P :P
can I have an extension please teach for doing my homework ;D cos it's raining and very cold and I won't be planting anything this weekend but maybe Tuesday - besides I want to watch the cricket :P
We won't be planting our spuds either Kev. Praps we will get a good day during the week
Too wet here as well and it's going to rain all weekend, well peeps you'll have to plant as soon as you can, good luck all. :( :( :(
I put bottles on sticks to stop me having my eyes poked out when I bend over
I cant get out to plant mine, the back door is wooden and warped shut.. ::)
I won't be putting mine out either. I showed a guy round the site yesterday and of the four plots I had to offer him, two were under water!
Think I'll leave them chitting in the spare bedroom for a few more days.
ours are in, 3 in the hot bed covered with a cloche and 2 lots in leaf bags covered over, home guard ;D
Swots!!
My plot is waterlogged so maybe next week !
Hoping to plant mine on Mon or Tues (fingers crossed)
I'll try to get mine in this week, Saturday it pee ed down and yesterday was so cold and I just couldn't get warm, good job the heating was on at the club, where I had my dinner and quite a few Woodpeckers. :P :P :P
Yours sounds a good allotment site!
I got myself 3 toy tubs and a recycle bin
Dalek compost in one
Manure in the 2nd
Leaf mould in the 3rd
And a mixture of the three in the last
All topped with soil and covered
If I'd have remembered my spuds I'd have been away
The ground planting will have to wait. :'(
setting a good example then ;D
I planted my one potato
Bless its little soul
And just as I was told to
Filled up the great big hole
Arran Pilot is its name
I hope it grows and grows
'Cos I want to win this game
To cure my potato woes
In taking part in Corney's challenge
We become a potato dude
But he's not here much to manage
'Cos he's banned for being rude ;D
So Arran Pilot do your best
And heat up this competition
Then we can have the best spud fest
Good enough for exhibition ;D :P
Pentland Javelin in on Sunday by my good partner.
3 in a hooj pot with loads of muck, compost and potato fertiliser. Wrapped up in a large polythene bag :-)
Let the wait begin !!!
I planted 4 Rocket in 3 tubs and a bin today in the rain, :o the ones in the ground will be done in the next few days. :-\ ;)
4 rocket in a dustbin yesterday. Am expecting lift off any time now.
Our Pentland Javelin are going in today. ;D
I dug over the bed this afternoon, and I've got a tray of Lady Cs chitting away nicely. Tomorrow, with any luck!
Tony put ours in today under a cloche
Two well-sprouted Witchill went under a Geoff Hamilton cloche yesterday.
2 Red Duke of Yorks and 3 Sharpes Express in bag/bins today in the garden :D
This morning: one Lady Cristl in a tub at home.
But I have some Red Duke of York tubers and having read the last post, now need to find another tub :-)
Just planted 6 Rockets in the allotment this morning
X Chas
10 Rocket planted yesterday morning. Covered in a fleece tunnel. ???
I haven't covered mine should I ?
X Chas
Cover with a fleece Charlie, or large plastic bottles or anything you can think of to keep the soil warm, the warmer it is the quicker they'll grow. ;)
3 Swift planted in polypots and a handfull of Purple Eyed Seedling that I found from last year thrown into a bag for good measure, Let battle commence ;D
Wood a black bin liner shoved into the top of my be be okay
On Saturday 19th February (in the pouring rain) I planted one Swift in a big pot of old compost, then placed it inside a black dustbin on top of an upturned pot, and put the lid on.
I stood the dustbin in the corner of the most sheltered part of my back garden, and forgot to check it till yesterday. I dug around carefully. The shoots are still green and look a little bit bigger, so I put the lid back on. When the weather is better I will take the lid off.
As the compost is only general purpose I am planning to feed once it is up and growing.
I planted 2 Rocket in the ground today, the soil has just about dryed out. :-\
oh yeah, and what happened to the start date >:( just cos you are the boss doesn't mean you can change the goal posts ;D
Finally got the back door open today 8) and planted my spuds, in black florist tubs again. ;D
Are u all keeping that soil nice and warm. :)
no :P
letting nature take its course
Oh yes we are absolutely flying here Kev! :P
bed covered in polythene
Marfonas in trays chitting lovely
After a second attempt with a bigger digger I have got the tree stumps out :) :) :) :) but not soon enough to join the spud challenge on time :'( mine are still on the windowsill.
first home guard showing, in a hot bed, protected by a cloche, no sign of the ones in the leaf bags yet ;D
Bugger all here. :'(
nowt anywhere else :-\
Watch that frost Scousers. :o
I don't think frosted tops in spring matter; the roots are unaffected, and the plant very soon recovers.
forgot to look :(

My rockets are just showing.
(//)
these are a couple of buckets with variety Rocket in them growing in a unheated greenhouse
Ours are up yippeeee
not a sausage, but I did plant my one spud very deep for protection and what with the scorching days and rather chilly nights what's a spud to do ;D
Quote from: calendula on March 24, 2011, 14:36:18

what did you plant sausages for Calendula ;) :D ;)
No show yet here :-\
One Rocket in a tub, just about poking his nose above the soil. :P
3 strong and lovely shoots pointing upwards into the light :-)
Aw, stop making me envious. Nowt showing yet.
I keep looking, but nothing seems to be happening :(
Out of the ground 2 inches ;D
Was going to plant a couple of rows outside today but had second thoughts and going to wait another week
1st sighting of a Red Duke of York (in bags in the garden) Woo hoo!!
I put two Arran Pilot in 12" pots to get them started and bung them in the bottom of the cheapo plastic greenhouse overnight, warm weather here so one is showing and the compost has cracked on the other. I put another in a sack yesterday.
Four Rockets up in the tubs, the ones in the ground are no shows so far. ;D
ours in the ground under fleece are up, will see about the tubs tomorrow ;D
Right then.
I just harvested mine and a load of chips to go with the fish we got from Ace's trout farm in the Isle of Wight
If was Fish and Chips to die for
Mrs ACE does a curry sauce to go over the mushy peas like you wont believe and they all said that my forced rhubarb and ice cream defied criticism as a pudding
Did u go back in your time machine for them. :P ;)
Spuds in leaf bags all 3" tall monday, earthed up with another 4" of compost ;D
My Arran Pilot are up
the Sharpes Express are showing through ;D
my arran pilot hasn't taken off yet - must have jet lag ;D but am sure the recent rain will induce flight
They'll be off like a ROCKET, u just watch. ;D
5 pentland javelin up under the cloche
Yay, a couple of my rockets have taken off in the dustbin.
Two of the Rockets in the tubs have just been earthed up ;D
The one with a mixture of manure, council compost, leafmould topped with soil is really getting going :o
The manure one is 2nd best :D
With the leafmould and the c/compost one are both a few inches above the soil :)
The ones in the ground are still a no show :'(
;)
Had a peek under the cloche and the Witchills are up to and looking good.
Think Tones gonna earth ours up today
Just earthed up the rocket in pot. Very strong growth
Just been told by OH that I have 4 descernable rows up at the plot too so will take a gander shortly ;D
3 pots of Pentland Javelin going strong ;D

am pleased to say my single, planted in the open ground with no protection Arran Pilot has finally taken off in flight, albeit delayed ;D now aiming for the skies, well at least one inch above ground ;D bon voyage
One spud, u tight git. ;)
my spuds are through!
One out of two spuds in the ground has finally shaken the soil from it's head, the ones in the tubs are going well, one is romping. :D

oi you, less of the 'tight' ;D
there was method in my madness though - just wanted to see how many spuds I will get from just one tuber :P it is now 2 ins above ground ;D
If you had planted two you could have compared the harvests. :P
Both the ground spuds are up now and the ones in the pots were earthed up again yesterday. ;D ;D ;D
My Swift potato in a bucket inside the dustbin is doing well. I may lift the bucket out so it can get more light, it is looking a bit spindly.
I have just planted the rest of the Swifts at the allotment. Hope this lovely weather stays a while.

nah, waiting until after next weekend ;D
Yesterday I saw the first signs of flowers forming on the plant. ;D
Flower buds on my arran pilot
Had a firkle, Kev, only marble sized at the mo, maybe the rain will help later in the week ;D
Sieved some soil my mate was throwing out and topped up all my 4 spuds in their tubs with it. ;)
On the other hand, in the hot bed, hen's egg size ;D
I'm being good and leaving it another week ;D
Still topping mine up in the tubs, the two in the soil are a good few weeks behind. ;D
Hope everyone's spuds survived the frost :-\
Or was it sack barrows out and dragged them into the living room to keep warm ;)
We fleeded our challenge ones but the others all over the plot got caught

Wow!!
Mine are about the same wonder what mine are like. What date were we supposed to dig thgem up
X Chas
I've no idea, just couldn't wait. Don't like new spuds too big.
GWE What sort of compost did you use.
'firkle' day tomorrow, I want some ;D
Just used mp compost from Wicks. Fed with Tomorite. They taste bootiful.
Wow theres plenty there AR, how many seeds did you put in the bag, they look yum, in the steamer, mint and butter, job done
The date for the challenge is the weekend 4/5 of June. ;D
Just 3 swift but talked to them alot though ;D ;D
So only 4 weeks to go!!
x Chas
Ours look the healthiest spuds ever from the top. Will have a little firkle tomorrow.
Found 8 larger than a hen's egg in the hot bed so, salmon and new potstoes with our salad ;D
Eeeh, sorry, I'm too tired to think nearly. The four in the big tub - one is thinking about flowering I think. The one next to it has buds and the two behind them are um behind. Two in sacks and the two in pots are stocky, green and healthy looking like the in ground maincrop. I'm not expecting much from the pots and sacks after the heatwave though. I'll have a firkle tomorrow.
Didn't know when we were supposed to dig em up but we were bloomin hungry so we just got one root up.Ok but not fandabbiedozie. Pentland javeline. Twas enough for 2 of us

Down near worthing or hastings, can't remember where precisely, just somewhere to park the 'van while we go see my grand babies ;D
A fine part of the world Manics ;D
BTW - my spuds (the leaves) are being munched by snails :-X I've no idea whether any spuds will survive it. memo to self, if I try this again next year, don't grow them in the garden !
near worthing ;D
looking forward to taking spuds to my down there family ;D
Be careful if you go to Hastings, my mate Harry went there once, minding his own buisness and some bugger had his eye out. :o
Spuds, I knew there was something else, firkled mine Saturday and there was some decent sized ones, may have a few out tonight. ;D ;D ;D
I've just dug up one plant and have a meal for two tomorrow. :-X
LOL at you and your mate Harry, Kev :D
Maybe I should have a firkle?
4 of my Arran Pilot have buds and the other is still thinking about flowering.
I also have a Pink Fir Apple or Charlotte volunteer which got missed in the upheaval of reconstructing the garden so it'll be interesting to see what Mother Nature has given me as a bonus :)
There we are, not a big haul but, not watered much either ;D
Dig up date is this weekend folks, although some have been a bit impatient, my excuse was my plant on the end had wind damage so I dug it up, well that was my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :-X ;D
Well any joy. ;D
will be doing ours on Tuesday will have camera at the ready :D
oh bum, just ate the last of them for lunch today - yum.
But great idea Kev, will deffo plant more next year.
I tipped mine out of its pot last weekend and had a (small) meal for two. BUT... my swift from the allotment are bigger and more of them. Maybe a bigger pot next year.
Pulled enough for tea from one plant will dig out properly tomorrow It was raining when we were there, If I can find out how to post pictures Will do . Thanks Kev really looking forward to dinner.

Lifted one root of Lady C on Wednesday and a second on Thursday; in each case plenty for a meal for the two of us. And now it's starting to rain, which should do the rest of them a power of good.

Do I have to pay Dan to put photos on here??

Hugely busy weekend (I'm on a coffee break) while it is dry here but my other half is away from tomorrow so they can stay where they are. I emptied a small pot midweek though and there was enough for a meal for the two of us which is good considering I've not been able to give them much attention.

We shuffled these out of the pot last weekend. Seems that most people have pulled early though !!!!
I dug up three Rocket plants yesterday with about four meals for two, I will put a piccie on my avatar when the teenager reminds me how to put it on. :P ;D ;)
Will look at mine in a day or two when I have finished eating the leftovers from last nights BBQ. I do like them straight from ground to pot.
the results are in ...... insert drum roll.......... and the only description I can find to sum them up is pathetic! Grown in a sack, lots of tiddlers. Not sure there is even enough for 2 of us. But I will try growing them early again next year, but this time in the ground ::)

red Duke of York from a couple of weeks ago were better, not brilliant, but very tasty :)

Dug up mine to make room in the giant cloche for other stuff, didn't expect much because the plants didn't look very well, but the potatoes were fine, chicken egg size. Lookind forward to dinner tonight. Probably could have dug them earlier. This really works, thanks for the suggestion, Kev. I won't need persuading next year :)
Been away for a few days Will dig mine up either tomorrow or Saturday.
Still no idea how to put a picture on here any help would be gratefull
