Title: Swapping apple/plum grafting material?
Post by: leesa662000 on February 01, 2011, 16:38:04
Hi there,

APPLES:
I have braeburn, and unknown variety that fruits very early (good eater) and redlove.

Plums:
DAMSON merryweather, and victoria plum

Would LOVE another type of Damson, different plum, a good pretty crabapple or a good cooking apple. I have rootstocks arriviving in the next few days and would only need a few pencil sized twigs.

I'm happy to send out some grafting material even if you have none to offer me :)
Thanks for reading x  Leesa

I have a really tasty plum which I grew from a stone.  I want to graft it onto a dwarfer rootstock because the tree is extremely tall.

Would you like some?

Yes please! Have you bought a rootstock for your plum, and if so....do you want some of my damson to make a dual tree?

No, I haven't bought rootstock yet.  I'd forgotten all about it until I read your post.
I've never done it before, is it easy to do? Do you know which rootstock is suitable for a plum, I don't want it to grow too tall.
Let me know what you want me to send you, how big should the twigs be and how many you would like.  PM me your address.
I'd like to have a go with the damson please.

If you look on buckinghams web site they have a few different rootstocks. I might need to read up on this, it sounds like a interest project. :)

Ahhh. lol. I love blackmoor nurseries, you get exactly what it says on the tin. I've bought so many seeds from ebay and they've turned out somewhat different than advertised.

I remember buying black poppy seeds last year....I got 2 to grow....I waited and waited  for the flower buds to open and guess what!! They were white :(

PS. Forgot to say (for all of the people that have never grafted before)

I learned a few years ago on.....wait for it.....YOUTUBE!

They have so many videos on it, really beats the hand drawn diagrams in books.

Just search apple tree grafting and it has it all.. I personally prefer saddle grafting.....it gives such a neat finish and (for me) it's the easiest. One thing I will say is that you need to be a bit of a perfectionist with saddle grafting because it won't work unless most of the cambium (s) are meeting.

I do some voluntary work at a walled garden I will get you a list of varieties that are grown
Be carefull cutting into any prunus as there is a risk of silverleaf
Deacons are a good source fo rootstocks are if you have a horticultural college nearby they will sell you some failing that take some suckers from any rootstock

I have a delicious apple that I got from Lidl.  No idea of the variety.  I took it to Garden Organic day last year and they could not identify it.  I want to have another so I am very interested in the ease of grafting.  I have been offered a professional job but they charge £25 for two.  If only one takes you only get one, but if neither takes they will try again for no charge.

I have a huge Discovery if anyone wants any bits of that.  It certainly will not miss a few bits  I would like to graft some of it onto something smaller it is far too big.

I also have a huge golden delicious but it is not quite like the ones in the shops  It is much more aromatic and flavoursome.  It is also rather prone to mildew so I spray with stinging nettle tea every year.

This sounds like an interesting challenge.  I also want some mirabelle plums and there is a whole row not far from me, so I can easily scrump a few prunings which are overhanging the path.  Even better I could chat up the owner.   It would be nice to have several colour plums on one tree.

Twoflower...nurseries like Deacon's, supply rootstock and the materials for crafting too.
Most of their apple varieties are supplied as 'crafting material..only couple of pounds per pundle.
They also do whole kits..where you get x-amount of rootstocks, your choise of craftwoods and sealing tapes& wax.
This is their site...http://www.deaconsnurseryfruits.co.uk/ (http://www.deaconsnurseryfruits.co.uk/)
I'm sure other nurseries does something similar.
Shame that all of you didn't start planning earlier on..I have pruned my trees and I don't have suitable wood left on my trees.
Could you start this thread again next autumn and I'll be able supply all sorts then..or save for later if needs to be. ;D I have forbidden myself for expanding my fruit tree stock..or it will over take my allotment. ::) 'Room' for one more plum and I'm now waiting it to arrive. ;D

I agree its a brilliant idea.
At my house i have four neighbouring apple varieties but no names for any of them that i am going to try some grafting with onto my giant eating? apple tree. But once ive "perfected" the technique I'd love to take part in a swap of material.

But have to learn to walk first :)

I love grafting and started learning last Autumn. it is so easy and I also learnt from you tube. The only things I used were a good sharp knife, alcohol rub to clean bark and florists tape to bind. The only graft I use so far is a chip bud graft as it can be done any time of year.

Here is my blog entry on my cherry results from last year. http://plantsalive.webs.com/apps/blog/categories/show/942491-graft (http://plantsalive.webs.com/apps/blog/categories/show/942491-graft)

I would love to swap some scion material. I have some apple, golden delicious and jonogold, plum - victoria and denistons superb. Cherry stella. I want to make some cocktail trees up.

Is any one in Wakefield, West Yorkshire who wants to swap locally?

You are right..I can't find it neither ::)
I've got their paper cataloque though..and crafting wood is £1.90 per scion of one variety or £17.50 per 10  ( ::)pricier than I remembered :-X)
Rootstocks £3.25 each,5 for £16.00 , 10 for £25.00 and cheaper again more you buy.
Crafting kit; 3 rootstocks, scion woods, tape and wax £25.75

Leesa, I'd love to try your very early apple. I have an apple that stores very well, and I really like its taste as well. It's fairly acid in October, and I was still eating them last May, by which time they are sweet (and don't look very good anymore, because I just store them in my unheated kitchen). I don't know what it's called, though, because it came with the house.

In that case blackmoors or ebay are looking like the best value at the moment.

Had a good conversation with a bloke on eBay last night. He does it as a business and if you ask he has lots of different fruit tree scions. Good price and he was very helpful, just look up scion and it pots up. Bought some rootstock from him last week and they look nice and healthy.   Twoflower

I think you are referring to this chap. He does seem reasonable but I would rather do a mutual swap and hopefully get more variety than four, but still a good find.

A site in America for the home orchard society, they organise yearly scion swap fairs. great idea. at the bottom is some pictures I think it says 2010 of scion material at the fair. one of the shots has dozens of buckets each with a different apple variety!!!
