Title: Got ground at last!
Post by: Lizann on February 01, 2011, 14:20:38
Well, after five years of waiting for an allotment I have finally been given a strip of ground on the family farm ... it's only taken me five years to persuade them.  Am so excited.  But what to do first???  It's just a field at the moment, so need to fence a bit to keep the coos oot.  Any suggestions welcomed!

Oh congratulations! That's great news. Yes I'd say fence would be good! That will take some work, or are you getting someone in to do it?

I suppose clear the ground, a patch at a time, compost the couch grass under tarp, if indeed it is couch.
Plan to grow a small number of things.

Feb could be shallots if you like them.

March - potatoes, onion sets...

If you like leeks you can start them off now indoors.

Congratulations!
I would put the fence up and keep the cooos in until you are ready to plant, get free manure with no barrowing that way! ;D
