I wouldn't even think of planting anything yet. Next month I'll put broad beans in, ready for planting out as the soil begins to warm. If you plant prematurely, in cold soil, the seed usually rots.

Just fyi, Realseed do a month by month calendar of what you can sow at

http://www.realseeds.co.uk/Monthlysowing.html

but of course bear in mind that it centres around their seed collection and isn't exhaustive.

When I can get my act together, we are going to grow some mizuna, mibuna, lettuce and rocket on the windowsill and see how we get on - but this is for cutting salads rather than anything to go outside - followed by peas in containers for planting out later.  March does seem to be the watchword for a lot of stuff.

Every year many of us start our plants off far to early.I know one year in my haste I had Runner Beans climbing up the living room walls and it was much to early to put them out.   :)

When I started gardening in the mid 70's I remember preparing a seed bed and planting all these things that said March on the seed packets... my dad said it was too early... but I planted them anyway.. it turned cold and nothing germinated...  :'(

Listen to the old gardeners.( I should re-phrase that in case I upset somebody) Sorry TeeGee. The gardeners who have been at it for a long time.
They are never in any rush to start their stuff off and yet their crops seem to catch up with ours.I am not going to be in so much of a rush this year.

Anyone who is really desperate could grow pea shoots in the kitchen window.

There is significant advantage in planting early as you miss the disease and pest burden as it ramps up in the summer.

But now is still a bit too early - though I have sown onion seeds and broad beans for planting out end Feb/early March.

There was someone on here who gardened next to an old Italian guy and the only 2 words of English he spoke before mid-May were "too early, too early".

Hi Normally i sow my first row of peas such as early onward in the second or third week in feb weather permitting. Most years they do great. maybe one in five they struggle to germinate in a cold snap.

I also sow inside and plant out leeks every two months through the year and so will also be planting out leeks in a couple of weeks to. Everything else aside from sowing sme salad in the greenhouse is on hold for longer days but i also start of a few tomatoes indoors at this time and pot them on to go into the greenhouse in march but again whislt most years this gives me early tomatoes one in five years they rot of in a cold march.

So read the packets but dont be afrid to give a few early sowings a go. seeds are 19p a pack in netto right now so what have you lost?
good luck x sunloving

Plant outside in Nottingham - not yet.
Sow outside - not yet.
Sow indoors now onions, leeks, broadbeans.  Peppers and aubergines if you have a heated propagator and a greenhouse.  Sow early March if you don't have a greenhouse.
Sow peas indoors second half of February for transplanting 4 weeks later.  If you are not worried about losses, sow peas outdoors in March.  They are pretty hardy, but I give them cloche cover all the same.
Second half February sow lettuce indoors for planting out under cloches when they are big enough.  Rocket and cress are pretty hardy and you can try some outside under a cloche second half of February.
Sow tomatoes 2 months before they can be planted out.  In Nottingham planting out starts in May, but they will need cloche protection because the Midlands can have late frosts right to the end of May and even into early June.  Tomatoes get killed by the slightest frost.  If you have a greenhouse a month earlier, a heated greenhouse even earlier.

Good luck.

next weekin the propagator, peppers and golden sunrise toms to be grown quite large to plant out undercover in march.
