Title: strawberries
Post by: bedrockdave on January 29, 2011, 16:49:47
I have lots of marshmallow strawberries which are wonderful but they crop all at the same time ,to the point of leaving them to rot ,as we are fed up of them, or give them away, if I was to  cover some with glass cloches will they crop earlier?

Yes, if you cloche some of your strawberry plants they will come earlier, and also if you shade (cool) some of them they will come a little later.
If you really want a spread out crop though, you will have to plant a range of different varieties.

I have frozen our glut chopped and packed in sugar (also mixed with raspberries and anything else going) and I am really appreciating them at the moment. I call it "fruit sauce", and it goes with icecream, or mixed with yogurt and whipped cream with brown sugar on top blasted with a flame for a crackly bit, underneath a steamed pudding, all sorts of uses. The sauce stays fresh tasting and brightly coloured.
