A well discussed subject so far. All the usual 'celebs' have signed up against the idea but one has to listen to what is actually proposed. Charities could but (could not take it on) in the current economic climate.
As the low national ownership of what is left of OUR forests we MUST hold on to those remaining (18%).
I do appreciate that UK is in DEEP financial nuts but our current & future generations have to have access to our land.
This Government has gone too fast, too far, in trying to reduce the national debt.

Whatever happened to the 'Right to roam',

If OUR forests end up in 'Investor hands' you won't have the 'right to roam'.
The fences will go up, the gates will be locked & your roaming days will be over.

Tough living in the UK innit?

It is always England that seems to be suffering.  Is it not time for some independant devolved powers.

Is this really an effort to save money or an attempt at giving their cronnies a tax fiddling opportunity.  Forestry was always a bit of a tax earner.

There are still public rights of way in some forests, like the Harling Drove through Thetford Chase and The Peddars Way. I worked in Thetford Chase in the 1950's, one forester put a padlock on a gate on Harling Drove, phoned the Forestry Fire Officer and told him he could get the key at X. The reply was "My men are not going to mess around after keys, they will just drive through the gate and you can repair it at your own cost". Our fire tenders had a 9" channel girder on the front for that purpose. He soon removed the padlock.

Of all the woods I walk in - and I'm a regular with my dogs - it's the bastard National Trust that have excluded me from woods I've walked in for years.  Put the forests up for sale, and gang together to buy them, then they're ours and no one can keep us out.

This is an inosculation in The Chase south of Newbury, owned by the National Trust.  We were fenced out last year while they "improved" it by cutting most of the trees down and putting up wire fences.  I doubt the scum-sucking barbarians even knew what an inosculation was when they cut it down. :'(

Enlighten me!? Looks like a coppice so it really should be cut.......but why exclude people except when you're actually using a chain saw?

We were excluded to break the notional ownership we felt, so that when it is re-opened we'll be complient little sheep and keep to their authorised paths and not let our nasty dogs run around - and they're putting bloody cattle into the wood to ensure we comply.

It's a birch-hazel inosculation, very unusual, and very impressive (if you're impressed by that kind of thing, as I am).

Once again (in view of many other many other things that have happened in Britain since) I feel that I made the right decision 45 years ago when I moved to Switzerland with my young Swiss wife. Here, in this still beautiful country access to all land (not of course people's gardens and houses) is a given right. There are no 'trespassers will be prosecuted' signs because land, (although often in private hands) isn't allowed to be fenced-off and there is a right-of-way for everyone.
Having always been a keen rambler and mountain-goer it's wonderful to have no constrictions on freedom of movement. I remember as a youngster us going on our bikes to places north of London and finding great walls cutting off huge acres of god's land.  This freedom here hasn't led to any land being destroyed or downtrodden, nor can any farmers of other egoists close off paths and trails. But then we don't have a monarchy and all their lobbying pals, limp-wristed snobs and whimpering hangers-on.

I'm reminded of the worst days of the great period of "Tory Misrule"... during the great privatisation sell (rip) off remember only a Tory would buy something they already own...  :-X

I've just looked up inosculation in Wikipedia and it is really interesting, thanks Unwashed.

My brother-in-law has worked for the FC for 20 years. he is urging everyone to respond to the government's consultation here:

http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/forests/index.htm (http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/forests/index.htm), and to write to MP's.

There is also a shorter term sale of 15% of FC woodland (40,000ha) over the
next 4 years that is going ahead before the consultation is complete more
info on this at http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/forests/index.htm

It's worth dropping a note to your local councillors too. Just over 90 days until you get to vote for them. It's very unlikely that councils will be buying anything in these "times of austerity" (a euphemism for abandoning the vulnerable & less fortunate) but they could be looking at ways to support organisations or groups of people with a focus on good woodland accessibility and management rather than profit.

Yesterday's Guardian said the National Trust are looking into buying some of the forests, and there was another article about how lots of celebs like Paul McCartney and Melvyn Bragg are protesting. Much as I'm against this policy, the cynic in me thinks it could be a ploy to distract from all the other cuts which are affecting the people without loud voices!
