Title: Raise beds for fruit
Post by: davejg on January 26, 2011, 17:50:11
I'm planning to grow cordon currants, red& white and  gooseberrys across the lottie. how wide would the bed want to be, it will be full width of lottie and about 62 high. :)

I would avoid having raised beds for fruit, as all the fruits that you mention have shallow roots and fruit production will be adversely affected in the typical dry Spring and early Summer. Even in wet Glasgow and no raised beds, Spring and early Summer can be very dry and soaking with a hose is often required.
Your bed will need to be 1.5 m wide.

My plot suffers from waterlogging in winter, but soft fruit seems quite happy regardless.
