Title: Vandals.
Post by: Good Gourd 2 on January 23, 2011, 10:55:06
Has anyone out there, suffered from vandals, on their allotments. Any hints as to what to do they only seem to strike late at night.   >:(

Horrible - all we ever do is notify police, sometimes people got so mad they would camp out but never came to anything, sorry

If you have a good relationship with the local constabulary they may send a couple of patrols around late in the evening... so make sure they know it's happening by reporting all the incidents..  :-X

Thankyou for replying,  thought of hidding in shed with cold manure water, but have to say dont fancy 11 to 2 in the morning in cold allotment shed. No backbone I know.  I`ll keep on to the local  PC plods.

We don't tend to get much vandalism around here as we are quite overlooked from surrounding houses..couple times a year some thieves may pay a visit. They are never after anything petty but machinery or larger bits of metal..unfortunately >:(
We've done everything possible to secure our boundaries and trying keep locking-the-gate-olicy in people's minds..so I think that has been big part of our success..it's not been always as quiet over here..
When it is school holiday time, we have few members who purposely hang around later in their allotments..just to be sort of 'deterrent' for those nosy 'little' bleeders who might feel temptation coming on for 'little' mischief...

We get a lot less than we used to because since we got rid of the old committee we've made a point of keeping the gate locked. We seem to get a round of breakins and damage every winter, but we're pretty sure it's someone on the site. Nobody's likely to nick a heavy generator unless they can get a vehicle in!

We have one episode of breakins in the last three years which is one to many, what can you do?apart from catching the scummy gits in the act, :)

We got security gates fitted 11 months ago and have had no problems since.  Though there are offenders who leave it open but it is catching them in the act.

You mean you think someone from your site stole a generator? That's terrible!

I have an allotment on a very large site that is surrounded by a six foot fence and it has a gate at each end of the site which are both kept padlocked at all times....however, we quite frequently have vandels and theifs.

Last year alone two sheds were burnt down in the middle of the night, polytunnels were slashed and lots of people has veg stolen.

I have had countless things stolen from my shed...hosepipe, riddle , spade etc.  i had kids write all over my shed in chalk (which i left in it for my girls to play with)...."you have bin robbed"...the kids could do with using their time to learn to spell!

Over all though, we deal with it and get on with it.  I love my allotment but i am very very careful what i leave down there.

If it were me i'd buy a cheap dictionary and leave it prominantly in the shed with a note "kids please ncik this it will help you to spell.  ;D

We've been having visitors on our allotment site so I have left the minutes from a fictitious allotment meeting on the sites vandalism in a couple of places(with pictures of the cameras) where we are going to install infra red wildlife cameras at undisclosed locations(similar to what they use on Autumn watch)to name and shame and prosecute if possible the people responsible

our council has paid for security fencing around the whole perimeter. The top half has been painted with axle grease.
