We lost one of our beautiful koi today Lancelot (he was grey like chain mail).
Has anyone else lost fish this winter ?
Sorry to hear that MacMac... I'm not a Koi man myself but I can see it would be a loss to you.. :-X

We lose fish every so often but it is usually due to a Great Blue Heron feasting which is why we only have goldfish. Or sometimes one gets caught in the pump (possibly was sick first then unable to get away from the suction? we don't know.) Sorry to hear you lost an old buddy, MacMac
My dad has lost all his this winter think he had about 8 in the pond at the bottom of the garden, all koi's, the ironic thing is that last year he didnt really bother with them, when he went to feed them one night there was only enough water in the pond to just cover them,not sure how it happened but this year he was more worried and checked water levels regular and really monitored them and they all died, some of them were quite old as well so that may not have helped
Our son who lives in County Durham lost eight of his. We haven't lost any.Our pump is running all winter so it keeps an area free of ice.
on Friday night my son was leaving at around 23.50 and his car was out of diesel and i have some in the shed in the back gardren and he went to get it, i had gone to ben when he started banging on the door like a mad man, when i got down he said my pond was empty.
When i got outside it there was only about an inch of water in it, the 3/4" thick ice was broken into big shards and ontop of the koi and only one was moving, and i thought that i had lost them all.
The return pipe from the filters had fallen off and emptied the water all over the garden from the pond.
I got in the pond tried to carefully remove the ice but it was so big it kept breaking and landing on the fish.
When i went to remove the dead fish i found they were all still alive, must have been the very cold icy night and the ice had kept them alive, some of the bigger koi about 20" in length had a bit of scale damage from flapping around under the ice.
I had to defrost the hose pipe and refill the pond with tap water as the water butts were all frozen solid.
I had to keep picking the bigger fish up and placing them near the hose pipe to get some oxygen into them and gently moving them backwards and forwards.
I went to bed at 2 am with just enough water in the pond to cover the fish and left the hose on filling the pond as i was up for work at 5am.
When i got up later i went out and all the fish were alive and they are still fine this morning.
I have not put a self tapping screw in the pipe to stop it falling off, i left the filters running all through the cold weather and snow with no problems at all so i have no idea why the pipe decided to come free.
yes, I live in CT and went to check on my fish yesterday and all of them were dead. I have had my pone and my fish for 4 years and never lost one in the winter. I guess with getting 80 inches of snow in 3 weeks and below zero temps was just too much for them to handle.
