We live in a humid area and have had one positioned over the stationary tub in the basement which means we never have to empty the collection pan.

We've got one..because of the bathroom..all moisture tends to 'travel into bedroom nextdoor and there would be damp walls with out humidifier. We only switch it on during shower and it is enough to keep whole upstairs dry.
We've got one of those free standing one..bought it from Argos about 10 yrs ago..and it did cost about £70ish at the time.
All the collected water is put into good use....I keep filling iron with it ;D..no lime-scale problems or cleaning the iron anymore neither ;D..win win situation..
Could not live with out it ;)

We have one in the cellar, it definitely works.  It has also lasted years, got it second hand from my brother when he moved abroad, and we have now been using it 10+ years.

We had one in our cellar in the previous house.  Had it running for five years, emptied it every other day.  Not sure about electricals in the bathroom though.  Could an extractor fan of some sort be installed?

Dehumidifier don't need to be in bathroom..as long it is somewhere nearby it will do the job..mine is just outside the bathroom on landing, well away from wet area ;)

Brilliant things. We brought one two houses ago when we had a serious leak in the roof. Think the other half got it for about 30 squids off ebay. When we'd dried out the room it went into the very very damp basement and spent a couple of years down there. Emptied the bucket every day which tells you how damp our basement was  :o

Has since then been employed in a variety of places, including the bathroom in our previous house which was the only room I could get the washing in but was also very cold & damp!

Now only comes out for occasional jobs like drying the new plaster in the living room, but wouldn't have been without it.

Can anyone say how noisy they are. I have thought about having one but OH concerned at running cost. I would want to run at night on Economy 7. Thanks Anne

Ours is probably about as noisy as the fridge, just a low hum. You wouldn't want it in your bedroom with you but I'd reckon you wouldn't notice it anywhere else unless you're an extremely light sleeper.
