Can any one explain why our birds (Chickens and a rescued pigeon) and for that matter the wild birds are so choosy about what they eat when it goes down the neck so quick that they can never actually taste it?
i think its a personal thing. Iam on my second lot of chicken and both groups like different things.
Exactly!! but how do they know when it stays in the mouth for milliseconds

and how do they know not to eat ants..........small spiders yes....wasp no!
They certainly eat ants!
When I am digging I often come across red ant nests and they eat the ants as well as the eggs too.
The only things my chickens aren't too keen on are slugs.
Their favourites, when they can catch them, are voles which go down whole.

Thats amazing I have heard they eat whole frogs, but did not realise they could catch a vole!
Got a photograph somewhere of one of our hens eating a mouse. She caught it and thrashed it against the concrete shed wall a few times and then swallowed it.
wow thats a tough hen!
Im hoping mine do develop a taste for slugs !

I put a bale of straw in last year following the discussion on here. Each time I turned it over there were loads of slugs & mine loved them. They were the big yellowish ones. They have spread the straw all over the floor of the run & are often seen nestling down into it, even when it's been snowing but they do have a roof on.
