Title: OK we did it. Now what?
Post by: PurpleHeather on January 08, 2011, 19:28:17
I am refering to a quote of

Go forth and multiply..........etc

Genesis 1

1 First God made heaven & earth 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. 6 And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." 7 And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day. 9 And God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth." And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day. 14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. 20 And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens." 21 So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." 23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day. 24 And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the cattle according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." 29 And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Oh the arrogance! :-[

What's so special about us that we 'rule' over the animal and plant kingdom?

I'm more for the holistic approach myself... ;)
We're a part of life on this earth, not above it. 8)

And I bet there were more than 2 fleas. Besides that, if I wanted to be preached to I would go to church.

Are we going to have a discussion about the Words in the Bible.  or is this going to be another ploy Purple Heather to wind folk up which you seem to do most of the time.   I am a Christian, at Church every Sunday and would rather the Word was not discussed on here because it seems to upset people and I am one of them.
If more people did read the Bible and follow the teachings, then this World would be a better place.  No doubt someone will say that Religion is to blame for troubles in this World,  Wrong.   It is People who make war not Religion.  The Lord is a loving God.
As a Christian I should be able to turn the other cheek but I am sick to death of your comments on here, upsetting people, me one and I am not referring to this present thread, but when you stoop so low to try and ridicule  the Bible I thought now was the time to speak up.

Except for the go forth and multiply which would make the world a very bad place...conservative estimate would be a doubling of the uk population every 25 years. Frightening idea.

I head this today, read by Thingy West wasn't it?

What got me was where god told Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge because they'd die.  But of course they didn't die did they, so god was lieing and the serpent was telling the truth.

History is so written by the winners...

I am non religious but my theory is that the Christians have their Old Testament and  book two (The New Testament)  The Muslims have the Old testament plus the Koran (book two) The Jews have the Old Testament and have not yet written their second book, what an interesting best seller their book two will be. Religion is the curse of nations and everyone thinks their beliefs are the only ones that matter and sod the rest.

As a Christian I find this difficult to stomach... Personally I'd rather be in the company of a good Muslim than a bad Christian.... there are good and bad people in all walks of life and sections of society... This is an allotment forum can we get back to growing things?   :-\

Well put Saddad.  Not every Jew, Christian or Muslim (and other faiths) is the same but the good ones share the similar traits that could make this world a better place.  Not forgetting the good atheists out there either.  Let one man have is faith and you have yours (or not) :) :)

I agree wholeheartedly Nigel.  The bible was written by man, not by a God, so that is why in this text man places himself above everything else on earth.

Man will become extinct one day as many animals have done over the past millions of years.  All it takes is another very large asteroid hitting the earth and sending up dust into the atmosphere to block out the sun's rays for several years.

When the dust settles, the earth will revert to its wild and natural state without man to destroy it with his chemicals and waste.

By the way, am I missing something?  Why did PH start this thread?  What is it all about?

I heard some of that being read on the radio and as a logical being who can see no reason to behave as though god (or any other one of the infinite possibilities for which there is no evidence) might exist, I still thought it was such wonderful poetry, written at a time when people needed superstition to explain things.
One day, hopefully before too long, god will go the same way as Santa and the tooth fairy - nice stories to cheer kids up - and we can use common sense instead of inherited guilt to justify our actions... Until then, despite the fact that god obviously isn't real, religion is very much alive and most religious people want to do good (as, in fact, do most non religious people!). People get all kinds of science wrong on a daily basis anyway, why not let them believe in magical zombie Jews who are made out of bread if they want?!

I'm not going to rise to that Ollie... although if I was of a certain persuasion you might be on the receiving end of some very unwanted attention...  ;D
The theology expounded in some of these posts is very, very infantile...  :-X

Actually, for an atheist my theology's pretty good - although it's generally from the evangelical brainwashing end of the spectrum. I've done my fair share of evangelism as a teenager whilst kidding myself that Jesus was my friend and eventually I set myself free from the lies that are taught in church. Sorry, but it's just a story about a dead guy who did good things and got everyone excited. Most Christians have too much emotional investment to admit they're wrong.

Yeah, good point Kev. Saddad - sorry for being insensitive, you have as much right to your carefully considered views as I do to mine and I could have displayed a little more courtesy in this case. My first response was meant to be about how beautiful the readings were on the radio & then I got rambling. Sometimes it's good to shut up.
