Title: Chitting
Post by: Mrs Ava on January 10, 2005, 00:05:40
These are my maincropper - Sante and King Edwards from Tuckers on top of the wardrobe in the spare room to chit.  Still awaiting spuds from T&M, salad and earlier I think I ordered............so long ago I have lost track!  :-\

Correctly, of course, they should be in the dark until the first sprouts show - otherwise they can be a bit early?? = Tim

Oh glad you mentioned that Tim! Mine are in the light
I didn't know you had to keep them dark, and never have before :-[  Does this give them stronger shoots, or is it just a matter of them sprouting too early?

Don't have to - but I reckon it's a bit early to chit some varieties, eg maincrop, if for outside. They do their own thing in due course. And keep frost in mind. = Tim

Roy - if you want to delay, keep in cool dark till they start to sprout. Ours are in the barn at the moment, & then they will come in to the attic windowsills at about 45F. We do NOT have central heating!! Each floor is 10F down on the last! = Tim

Thanks Tim, I'll put them in the shed that has no windows and see how they fare, although they have been indoors for a couple of days and the first and second crop have started sprouting, oops! ::)
