Title: Cherry tree
Post by: reedos on January 04, 2005, 22:17:44
I've two allotments, one well cultivated which I'm using for veg, the other not so. The plan is to turn the second one over almost entirely to fruit, with this in mind I've already planted strawberries, currants, gooseberries, raspberries along with a gage, plum and two pear trees. I fancy planting a hazel hedge for the nuts and a cherry tree.

Can anybody recommend any cherry trees, I don't want one that grows enormous so it'll need a dwarfing rootstock, any hazels and any other fruit I can have a go at growing ?

Reedos, I planted a dwarf cherry of the Stella variety but am growing it as a fan against a wall as I am short of space.  Pruned it wrongly first year but still got some really delicious large sweet cherries - so won't make same mistake this year and hope to get more!!  Stella is a sweet cherry variety which I much prefer as opposed to the acid varieties (Morello etc).  Well worth it and the blossom is an added bonus in brightening up the lottie.

Should have added that Stella is also self fertile which was important - again due to lack of space.

No idea on good sizes, sorry, useless woman I know, but mum has a HUGE morello in her little surrey garden and it produces more cherries than we know what to do with, and if we can beat the birds to it, the sharp morellos are devine to eat, but make THE most fabulous jam!
