Title: Finger food Christmas
Post by: PurpleHeather on December 18, 2010, 17:18:33
Our lot do not like the traditional Turkey and trimmings and this year we have decided between us we are gonna have a finger food Christmas.

Starters are going to be smoked salmon wrapped around cream cheese and deep fried king prawns with a dip.

There are loads of cakes we are all deciding over but we are unsure about the main course.

At this stage I wont tell what the contenders are because I want some one to come up with a great suggestion we have not considered.

In case any one wants to know we are going to have a big finger bowl on the table and make those gloves that remind me of being pregnant available.

We have friends over tonight and I have made mini bite sized things: quiches, cheese straws, mince pies, cupcakes, lamb koftas, chicken satay, breaded lemon chicken.

Are you wanting something like is more like a meal or just ideas for general party finger food?

To be honest it is something more like a meal.

In fact I was wandering about one of those middle ages sort of banquets where they have full chickens you tear apart but more up to date if you know what I mean.

I am always conscious of the  'Five a Day' and old banquets are very meaty. So something which includes veg.

We are doing similar here, and are having:
Baked potato (small size) with variety of fillings like cheese, baked beans, coleslaw
Onion bhaji and cucumber raita
A sort of kedgeree, with eggs, rice, and smoked haddock and ours has cheese grated and melted into it
An imitation of canned "all day breakfast" - baked beans, lambs kidney, beefburger pieces
Chicken thighs with an assortment of spices
Roast veg like carrot, parsnip, beetroot, onion, leek, cauliflower, potato and mixed herbs
Pasta spirals with chunks of roast squash and soya chunks in a spicy tomato sauce
(all served on large dishes for folks to help themselves)
Trifle
Fresh fruit
Crackers and cheese
Chocolate fudge cake
Best of luck with yours!

For those who are including Indian snacks in their buffet, try stuffed patra leaves http://www.natco-online.com/acatalog/info_C5110.html

These have never failed to be a hit when we've done them, and they couldn't be easier (the instructions are reproduced on the Natco website).  Widely available in Indian shops.
