Title: new asparagus spear popped up
Post by: gwynnethmary on November 12, 2010, 17:31:38
Help!  I planted some asparagus crowns in early spring, and they put up some spindly, feathery shoots over the summer, which have started to turn yellow.  I know that I have to cut them down when they get to that stage and burn them.  However, today I noticed a new shoot had come up, and is now about 10 inches tall, and it looks just like an asparagus spear.  Do I cut that down as well, even though it looks young and healthy/  I kow you're not supposed to cut the spears the first season.  It seems very late to have put on new growth like this.  I'm just a bit confused!

Well, if it happened on my bed, I would let it develop until I get round to chopping the whole lot down. It might just feed something into the roots, but frosts are going to do for it soon anyway.

I noticed an apple tree flowering recently - the sudden cold weather followed by long mild wet autumn is confusing everything and everyone!

I'd leave it alone too, until you chop the rest down.

But it's like having just the one chocolate Qahtan, you just have to dip in for another one........and when there's not another one there  :'(

I had a couple that were still there until a couple of weeks ago, then the frosts had them, and was strong 'cos hubby bought me a special knife last Crimble and next year I'll be delving away like a wild woman for my first ever picking  :)

Have you not thought about growing them?

but we do have a lot of wild asparagus here, if you can remember where the devil you saw it,,,,,, it's not all that expencive to buy, at the moment a couple of our shops have some nice thin stuff, I like it thin, I think it is called sprew in UK, this that is here is from Peru, but it's very nice.
