As I am stuck indoors twiddling my thumbs. I thought I would start the research for next years garden projects. Somewhere at some time I have seen a picture/painting/photo of a lady lying peacefully underwater, the view is directly from above looking straight into her face. I've googled 'ophelia','lady of the lake' and all possible words associated with the subject. I cannot find it anywhere, which makes me think it is not in the public domain.
So perhaps you have a copy/postcard/print/book with the image on.
To my memory she is a long haired ginger bird, very lifelike, dressed in white, lying just under the water, arms crossed over her thruppeny bits and a few waterlillys dotted about. She might be wearing a floral tiara. The main colour is green and you would think it was victorian. It could actually be a photograph.
let me know if you have any ideas, as I am stumped.
Sounds like one of the Pre-raphaelite type of picture.
Your description sounds very familiar- I'm wondering if it could be a book cover ? I also thought of fairy tales and did some googling myself but came up with nothing. I did also wonder about the Lady of Shalott/

This must be quite a garden project you're planning!
Where will you get the lady volunteer?
Birmingham Art Gallery has a very large collection of pre raphaelite for anyone that is interested. :)
Yes a wonderful collection. I remember a water/floating girl picture but not with hands across her "thruppenny bits" ( lovely expression) but holding a spray of flowers as above.
Hope you find it.
PaulW has it right.. sent up in a cartoon in the early '80's as "Ophelia Water Skiing"... ;D

Very near, I did find that one, but the one I am after is looking directly down, not a side view.
Already done the lady of shallot with no results, but thanks anyway.
I will have a look at the Birmingham collection, if I can get it on line.

Well if you are looking for a job, First you need to be a redhead, then go and fill your bath, get a bag of watercress to cover your bits and spare your modesty. Take a picture and post it in the watershed ;D
Don't ring me, I'll ring you.

I'd do it but where can one get a bale of watercress which, in my case, is what is required.
Ophelia in the brook seems quite popular a thing with young girls. Better than anorexia or Twilight I suppose

Still, you can't beat that tennis bird with no knickers on, scratching her bum. Now that's what I call Art

Google Agua caliente Coco Rocha for images.
This from the Saatchi Gallery (http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/portfolio/ArtworkDetails/image/1081.html) is also an interesting take on Ophelia.

and she got it from Korean Vogue Girl April 2007 ;D
If you are thinking of a lady with red hair covering her thrupennies what about this one?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Birth_of_Venus_(Botticelli)
There are some good links coming on here, thankyou, keep it up. What a remarkable group of folk you are. I still hope the one I am after will turn up.
I am sorry but as yet the design is under wraps. But you will be able to dine out on the tale when it all comes apparent on the telly. But not until next summer.
Those who are not into art can also help with another project. I need a list of pink fluffy annuals, you never know I might have missed some of yours on my current list.
Oh ***ger ACE I know exactly the pricture you mean, and it is definitely something to do with the Lady of Shallot, or something to do with Arthurian legend, and yes she's lying underwater.
My library is completely inadequate to find it, but I'll give it some serious thought.

Could be by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, he was one of the Pre-Raphaelites Ace's description ring's a bell.

Very similar style, but no you don't win a coconut. ;D
But blimey he liked the redheads didn't he. I always thought having red hair was alright for parties but not really suitable for everyday use. I won't have them in the house as they would clash with the decor ;)
I thought that the Ophelia by Millais was the red headed wife of Rossetti - Lizzie Siddal.
Only problem is , she hasn't got red hair but I'm sure that you could sort that Ace
The last time I saw hamlet, ophelia did her mad scene in the buff. That stopped all the sweet wrapper rustling from the school parties, and no mistake. i didn't know where to look.......fiirst ;D
Are you intending to have a floating dead body on your designer patch ACE ??
Could be interesting ??? ??? ???
Gawd this is frustrating.
I am sure I know which picture you mean but I can not find the one I am looking for.
I am now much better educated on the pre raphaelite works than this time yesterday but
can not find it.
Maybe imagined it. ???
I think I know the one you mean, I've been googling images with a few of the keywords you've mentioned...... :o :o :-[ :o :o..........must put safe search on!!!
I have a few suggestions....

well if nothing else you are making an old man very happy ;)
But the one I am after is still very elusive.
If any of you have a targeted advertising bug in their pc, your other half will be in for a bit of a shock when they log on ;D
Denise, I also went through the Birmingham art gallery. I will have to make a point of visiting it when I come up that way. what a fantastic collection.
Us Brummies are very cultured ;D ;D ;D
Last time I went in was about five years ago and they knock your socks off ;D
One of my ancestors has a painting in there
What was his/her name ?
His name is Augustus Leopold Egg.We have gone back through all of the records and he was descended from Henry Durs Egg who was gunmaker to the king and the family originally came from Switzerland.
I have seen that picture before....amazing :)
Had a quick search under nymphs for you........
I know she is not underwater but.....

Yes it was, they all painted her, hence lots of red heads in the paintings.
Someone did a 'copy' fairly recently as a photograph...lots of different paintings recreated including 'ophelia' using famous actresses/models posing...can't remember who though and that might be what you saw.
The more I think about it, I reckon it was photograph copy of ophelia. So I shall try searching with photos etc. Thanks.
I wonder if there is a knot hole in that tree ;)

Very nice though.
You don't by any chance mean the video of Kylie Minogue/Nick Cave's song 'Where the Wild Roses grow'.
That had the music on 'Strictly' tonight, which brought back a faint memory. It's on Youtube.
Couldn't get to sleep and just watched the film Sirens.....was that the image Ace? She wasn't a redhead though!
Ninny
No, sorry. The design for the garden we were going to use it for has gone on the back burner now. It was going to be our representation of the Lady of Shallot with the picture being one of our mosaics in the water feature. As our nursery and workshop is in a hollow at the foot of Tennyson down we thought it would be a good idea to do a Tennyson garden for a show but other commisions have now got in the way. One day though.
Ace,
Just wondering if this is the picture you were looking for.
