Title: what goes through your mind while digging?
Post by: goodlife on November 10, 2010, 16:26:58
I surprised myself other day while digging ::)...I was comparing the colour difference of different dock roots and wondering that if there is around 250 recognized different 'types' of dandelions, how about bloody docks?
Then I was distracted and I jumped into other job..digging ulluco out..curiosity got better of me and suddenly couldn't wait any longer and started digging..3 tubers..WHOLE 3 tubers!!! :-X (+ few not so lady like words). That taught me a lesson and now I've left rest of them well alone. I've memorized into my grey cells how not to harvest ulluco.
Then I was distracted again and started looking our birds feeding thinking of what I need to get for them for a winter..shopping list to do on back of the cardboard box....
Mind boggles.. ::)...I didn't get my digging done that day..I was too busy of thinking..and planning what needs doing and where..
So what about you?...Is it only me that is having there one sided conversations in my head ;D ???

I talk to the earthworms that have taken up residence in the ground - when I started 2 years ago there were only slug eggs.  Don't worry fellas, back you go, etc.

I talk to the robin if it's keeping me company, if not it's an even more one-sided conversation!  :)

Ahh...talking to animals is another thing.. ;D..I talk to my dog..birds...fox..cats..myself...I'm never alone in lottie..and if I got energy left for gossiping I'll give a moment to that too(not on my own ::))..
I would love to have 'world most clever person' sitting next to me while working..I could drop all these questions that comes to mind and have answers too ;D Once home I rarely remember those things anymore ::) Is it sign of 'over ripening of the fruit'? ;D

Dandelions and brambles notoriously have the ability to reproduce in several different ways via their flowers, sexually and asexually and can form "apomictic swarms" meaning there are lots of separate populations scattered around with smaller or greater differences between them. "Splitters" distinguish between these populations, and "lumpers" regard them as all the same species.

A proper botanist might turn up and put this better. I have never heard of docks having that ability.....

I have to keep telling myself not to put the fork though my foot - like twice before. Had to take it out before I could walk away!

I don't know, I'll have to ask him ;D ;D ;D. He does talk to the worms though as he puts them in a safe place.

Me watch, how very dare you ;D. I'm weeding, pruning, pouring the tea, chatting, accepting gifts & sometimes I tell OH he has done enough & we should go home but not very often
though. He needs to go a very funny colour ;) ;D. We are sort of no dig but OH does like a bit of digging so he likes to turn the manure in. Now if it was left to me it would be left to the worms, bless them.

Ouch indeed! Is your tetanus up to date?

I go into a state of mild trance, notice a lot of little things, but have to shake myself out of it and remember to alternate the digging foot or my back will know about it and not to put the b....y convulvulus roots in with the ordinary weeds etc.

We had a blackbird that came regularly and so close that he was in danger of getting soil thrown at him.  I turned over, he had all the worms.  When he had about 15 he went off to the nest and straight back for more.  He lived for 3 years.  The robins are fairly tame, but not like this.  I talked to him cime to think of it....never seen another blackbird like it.

This summer we had blackbird that came to 'chirp' front of me when I turned up in lottie..and I soon learned to turn some land over so it could get some worms for the young ones...so fun to watch it stuffing it's beak full ;D We carried on with our new found friendship all summer..I hope she will turn up again next year with same habit ;D My bird wasn't as tame as yours Galina..that one did keep a little distance. I feel little humbled when wild creatures show some trust.
I also noticed that there was lot of cinnabar moth caterpillars on certain plants this year..so, like a good girl I collected them up while weeding and gave them a new 'home' where to feast in peace ::)...and had little 'talk' with them too ;D
Does one ever really grow up ??? ;D
Haven't managed to fork myself yet though :o..I'm easily distracted but safely so far. Have you healed ok Tim?..Did you put fork through? :o

Goodlife I think that those of us who don't ever really grow up are the ones who retain a childlike sense of wonder for the world we live in.
I sometimes use the phrase for children of all ages.  :)

I have recently started to listen to 'Planet Rock' on DAB radio, and have been stunned to discover not only how many old songs I recognise but know the words to......the time flies by when I'm digging! ::) ;D
