I think it is wonderful that the government are giving the long term unemployed jobs.
But I also think I have lost the thread though because the jobs being allocated to the long term unemployed are the same tasks as were allocated to those sentenced to do community service.
Of course the criminals do not deserve the work and should be banged up so the jobs they have been doing Litter picking and gardening. Should be offered to the unemployed at the right rate of pay.
If we need Litter Pickers and Gardeners then I can assure the government that there are several thousand people who are currently working part time and short time, who would be only to happy to take on the work if full time work could be offered.
Are we being goverened by a load of millionairs who enjoy politics as a hobby? Because this sort of announcement is an insult to decent people who will do any job but can't get anything.........
What worried me was single and other half works parents. Are they expected to pay for childcare? A 9-5 shift isn't automatically covered by school hours so do the goverment pay for this or the jobless person?
Dispite this it's the right idea just be very careful about the how.
And the lastest think tank says low paid workers ( minimum wage upto combined £30,000) are going to be the hardest hit by cuts so not a great incentive to work.....
I agree, it sounds like an idea which hasn't been thought through by people who know what they're talking about.
If it's work, with no training, no supervision - then a) what work is available and valuable to society, which requires no skills, training or aptitude? b) if it's work, they should be paid the going rate for the work, during that period.
Or are they offering work-based training? In which case, that costs money to plan and structure and has to be of good quality to be worthwhile, but could be really positive. However it would only be useful if it related to the future employment possibilities of that person.
We have a skills shortage in this country, and need more highly trained people and people going through higher education. It seems unlikely you'll solve that by making pissed off people pick up litter.
Once they have learnt how to pick up litter for a month... where are all the jobs for people with one month's litter picking experience???
But it will go down so well with the right-wing voters and pub philosophers.
