I'm normally more of a reader than a poster but I really could do with some help.
I have been given the challenge by "the mrs" to find a nice weekend break in Wales!! Not brill news on a Thursday. :'(

Depends what you're looking for but we go to the Llyn penninsula every year - lovely beaches and within striking distance of Portmerion ( which I've never been to) Harlech castle and beach are lovely. You can also get to Snowdonia easily if you like a bit more height to your walking!
Portmadog you can get around from there.
