30 minute meals!! 3 hours washing up !! ;D
Nice series though!
Was discussing this with my mum the other day. She cooks for a living & still can't make any of them in under about an hour. Although if she didn't have to check the book three times for the instructions it might help ::)
Not normally a fan of Mr Oliver, but have to admit he's managed to put together a set of healthy meals from the few recipes I saw in mum's book. Lots of fresh stuff & nothing predone. No weird tinned things like Delia, or everything from the deli like Nigella (much as I like both of them!)
Funny thing washing up. My sister and I would cook the same dish. She would end up with a kitchen piled high with stuff needing washed while my kitchen had a couple of things to put in the DW (MHD you we didn't have them then!
I think with me it's the study of German that's to blame. Youbecome quite a..lly retrofits and can't cope with mess!!
When is Jamie's prog on ?
the book's good, got it cheap, and yeah maybe 30 mins is bit quick but possible in 40 ;D - he does say have all things ready first - I like it more than Nigel's
Jamies programme has been running on Channel Four at 5:30 Monday ~Friday.
I think this might be its third week!
I have the book too and yes you do have to be organised I am a fast cook but can only manage the main course in 30 mins. I made his frozen berry icecream yesterday and it was very refreshing. I always have yogurt in the house and had a mixture of frozen berries in the freezer so it was a great way to use some of them up :)
I must say its been nice using my food processor again! which you need for most of his recipes. I bought mine in 1986 a Moulinex and its still going strong ;D

They tore his programme to shreds on 'Watchdog' tonight, but in a nice way. You can see the entire week's programmes on Channel 4 on Sunday at 2pm (or thereabouts).
I've got his book on my Christmas wish list - as if I didn't already have enough cookbooks :).
I made his chicken pie last week. It was very good even though it took me 50 mins to make the pie, peas, carrots and my own dessert of baked pear tartlets with the remaining puff pastry. Looking forward to doing some more.

Must admit that I would be pushed to make those meals in 30 mins whilst reading the recipe and learning how to do it at the same time.
It was fair comment.
Just like the dishes cooked up on Ready Steady Cook. Too much for a novice to make in the time available. But they can be done and I would always encourage a new starter to try when they have plenty of time rather than rush it.
I would suggest that any one learning to cook or venturing into a new cooking experience and wants a recipe goes to either You Tube or googles for a video on how to do it.
There are some great sites on line and being able to stop and start is a great help.
Why buy a book when every thing is on line any way?
Just did my first Jamie Oliver 30 minute meal - well most of it! We aren't great pudding fans in this house and usually find the main course enough anyway.
So I made his cauliflower macaroni and salad. All ready in 30 minutes and I used the time it was in the oven to wash up the mountain of bowls, saucepans and food processor bits.
The pasta wasn't macaroni, the pancetta was bacon and the salad wasn't chicory but apart from that it was true to the recipe!! It was very tasty and we (2 of us) have enough left for 3 or 4 days!! :o :o Even after seconds!!
Whatever happened to portion control? ;)
Seriously though, the recipes worked well. It would be good if he also listed the required utensils at the top of the page and the nutritional value of the various recipes.
Not a Jamie groupie but I have enjoyed watching his 30 minute meals, I get the impression that his efforts could be covered in spit, ;)
