Title: Uk groceries in France??!!
Post by: antipodes on November 02, 2010, 11:40:44
Anyone else heard of this? There are now companies that deliver groceries from the Uk to france, but I mean a large quantity, like a week's grocery shopping! They ask 20 or 25% of your buy, but as many things in the UK are much cheaper than here, it might be worth it! I am flabbergasted. Could I finally be able to get things like crumpets, baked beans, pickles etc delivered to my door? Some things are very cheap in the UK - like household cleaners, DIY stuff, many groceries, like sauces, etc, tea (for example here the only tea that is decent is Tetley, they charge 3.70 euros for 40 teabags...), coffee, etc.
has anyone here done that or know of someone that does? Does it work? is it good value or not?

Just googled and found this, is it what you are looking for?

I love being in France and enjoy the markets etc but guess that if I was there full time, I would want proper tea bags and some other goodies as well!

I've heard of people doing it for financial reasons, but that would depend on the sorts of things you buy in your weekly shop. Are you going to price it up?

It would be exotic!

I'm not sure I would want it if I lived there. I lived in Germany and Belgium and I liked the food a lot. I more miss it the other way round. German jars of preserved cherries mmmm. And nice cooked meats and cheeses... And French food on holiday has always been lovely.

But I do like Earl Grey tea.

If it's just tea, I could send you a packet! It's very light to post. What brand do you like?

ha that is very kind of you. Don't worry, my brother does bring me over a few groceries to keep me happy (like vegemite!)  But actually it is financial! I will price it up, as many things seem dirt cheap to me, like Domestos, washing powder, tinned goods, etc. Perhaps an occasional delivery would be a money saver? as well as a way to get some goodies :D

In the UK shops can sell at loss, or cost price, they cannot do that here, it is called unfair competition. SO we never get the real bargain offers like in the UK (3 for £2, that kind of thing).
I agree that our food here in general is far superior, in terms of fresh food, especially with our wonderful markets. But I think it might be worth looking into... and hope I wouldn't gain pounds with all those British treats! Would have to stay reasonable :)

It will be interesting to see what a price comparison shows.
But I know what you mean about decent tea - the blumin yellow label stuff is vile!!

I always take boxes and boxes of tea bags to my daughter in Germany, and masses of chocolate digestives. But she has just discovered a fairly local shop that sells lots of UK things "such as golden syrup, cereals and some rather horrible English ready meals (but not rice crispies)" and she especially misses golden syrup - took some home with her last week after a visit here, before finding the shop.

When I lived in Oman I ate what the local people ate, goats and fish and camel and sorghum and so forth. I was quite surprised eventually to meet ex-pats, who were keenly exchanging notes on new supermarkets that had marmite and cornflakes. I suppose if I stayed there long enough, I would have sought out those things.

Golden syrup and suet are two things you just can't get here. They are so useful in baking, I always stock up in the UK, along with Vegemite.
1066 the yellow tea, we all know which one we are talking about, it is vile!  I get Tetley but what they call "Thé corsé" or strong tea here, not the fancy ones with the drawstrings, which are gnat's pee. they are probably the best sustitute, not as good as PG tips though :)
Other things you don't get here: Horlicks (yum! but so fattening), pickled onions, lots of relishes and chutneys (I could make my own but I am about the only one that eats it), crumpets, cadbury's chocs (re the horlicks remark), decent real ales :)

Of course I normally just cook and eat French now, been here 16 years, but it's nice to have a change now and then! And toiletries and household goods are so cheap in teh UK - I must do my sums...

I have heard about this as well as I would like a few things sent over for economic reasons.  A friend here ran out of her favourite tea just before leaving for the UK to see her dad.  She actually posted a box of tea back to her husband, by express post, so he did not have to wait until she returned!

I must admit that some of the food here is wonderful but there is still a strong French tendancy to eather coat it in sugar or can it.  I find that the discount supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl etc. do stock items more popular with UK tastes at a fraction of the price of the mainstream ones.

My cousin in Brittany has done this but shared the grocery order with a few other Brits so they could make up a bulk shop.
Great idea, wasn't around when I lived there for 7 years but must admit to returning to the UK twice a year to stock up.
Went to Spain one winter and found everything I went back to the UK for but just much cheaper.
Now back in the UK for good I find myself longing for things I can only get in France.
Guess we're never satisfied.

Yes never satisfied!

It's nice to hear people enjoying British food, because it's a common insecurity (and not totally unfounded) here that when it comes to food, and lifestyle, 'they do it better over there.'

But I suppose when it comes to mass produced processed foods, we still have the upper hand  ;)

Golden syrup is lovely! I much prefer it to honey. It's that strange almost smokey taste it has. And a lovely tin.

If it helps, you can make golden syrup with 600g sugar 450mls of water and a chopped lemon. bring it very slowly to the boil and keep it slowly boiling until it goes golden. Cool and strain then keep it for a week before using.

Makes a good treacle tart...

Have you tried
