Title: cutting back summer raspberries
Post by: lottie lou on October 30, 2010, 18:33:56
I have a small row of summer raspberries a friend gave me.  They weren't too bad this year but I have no idea which canes fruited.  Shall I cut the lot back or just leave them?  Thank you for any advice.

You can usually tell as the new ones are green and the fruited ones are brown.

If you cut all summer fruiting raspberry canes down you won't have any fruit next summer..so cut only the spent ones..and like aj said..fruited ones are brown..looking much more woody and you may still see old 'fruit' stems dangling from those old canes too.

Although some of this year's growth on mine has also coloured dark pinky-brown, and I found it really quite hard to see old from new by Autumn time.

I don't find it easy. I suppose that's why some people advise you cut them down as soon as you've harvested. (Easier said than done!)

Mine must be autumn ones too, last year I chopped them all and still got heaps of fruit. They are "Heritage", lovely, I chop them down end of winter (even though they look crappy all through winter).
