She kept it a secret, but just had a phonecall from my daughter saying she passed her driving test today. So in the family tradition Dad has to get her a car, Now you know my views on silly little puddle jumpers, but I havn't a clue what is trendy for a young lady to be seen in. My wife reckons that a Corsa would do the trick, but she is biased owning one herself. What would you get your daughter as her first motor? Sorry Kev but there is no need for you to answer ;D

My daughter wanted a Corsa - I said no as you don't know who's had it before what with being a boy racer car. Then she wanted a Clio - her Dad said No "cos it's French" and he dislikes working on French cars.
Finally got her a 1400cc Polo - 10 years old.
Unless you're loaded, look at what vehicles are still running well when they are 12+ years old, to give you an idea of availability of parts, reliability etc. Then run it through an insurance comparison site - daughters first insurance, aged 17 in March 2008 was £1200 with Elephant.
Anything in the lowest insurance category really! My 17 year old daughter says Fiat Pandas and Puntos are the usual round these parts, with a Mini being the lusted after 'if we were rich we would have one of those' cars ;D
Congratulations to Miss Ace on passing her test, I take Daddy never gave her any lessons as she actually passed. ;)
I would recommend a Chevrolet Matiz, very nippy around town, cheapish on petrol and can beat a gas guzzler away from the lights. ;D ;D ;D

Our daughter has stuck with the Clio.
1st one she slid on black ice into a telegraph pole (put the little hamlet into darkness for hours!), car written off but thankfully it kept her safe - that was after 5 years of driving.
2nd one this July, hit a deer sadly, car written off and, again, thankfully she was uninjured - after 10 years of driving.
...................but it depends on if you have to borrow her car ever, just can't see you in a Clio somehow ;D

Mine started off with a Nissan Micra & kept it until she needed a larger car to transport baby etc. but stayed with Nissan. She was dead chuffed last week when her hire car in Madeira turned out to be a Micra.

When i priced up cars i found that the puntos had more extras like electric windows than the other car for the same price. Ive had mine 7 years(it was 5 when i got it) and its done 113,000 miles and still going strong. You get a spate of repairs at year ten replacing seals and pipes but after that its plain sailing.
PS you can still service a punto as the plugs and oil filter are within reach for a normal person.
The only thing that is a pain is having three doors rather than 5 if you have regualr passengers.
Since i always have the back seat down and compost manure tools and the dog in the back its not ususally a worry for me.

I would recommend a Fiesta. Mine is a V registration, starts first time even when I haven't used it for several weeks and it has never let me down.

There was a 4x4 variant of the Panda IIRC..... Fiesta's are supposed to be a good bet if you find an unmodded one, the engines are pretty easy to work on according to those of my friends that do that sort of thing ....

Eek don't let my kids read this! If they want a car they have to save up and buy it themselves- the price of the lessons and tests is enough! :o
We've got a Nissan Micra as well. At the cheaper end of the market, they're a good car to get second hand. They tend to last a long time and are cheap to run. (well, cheap, for a car!)

You and she must be delighted. Assuming that insurance will be ruinously expensive for all but the smallest cars, try a Honda Jazz, Fiat Panda, or Hyundai i10.
This what she wants Ace, but I doubt it will fit on the Ferry. Comes in 6.5 litre version.
