Title: I've just seen yellow oyster mushroom kits.
Post by: Vinlander on October 25, 2010, 00:51:23
If you've never tried them the yellow ones are miles better flavour than the normal white/grey ones (ie they actually have a flavour) - but I see them less and less in the shops.

Kits have appeared in garden centres - about the size of two bricks for £9.99.

Anyone tried them??

I can't justify spending that much hard earned cash - even for a real delicacy - unless they are very reliable and productive - and ideally only if they can be persuaded to spread into a nice bale of damp straw...

Cheers.

I have not tried to grow any mushrooms because every one I know who has, has wasted their investment money.

Growing conditions, I am told, has to be just right for them.

I shall be interested too to find any one who grows their own with success.

I've had mix success with mushrooms..those that I had in kit form..grown in polystyrene box and came with 'bedding' were great..other year one shop had priced their kits wrong and before they corrected it I've manage to be greedy and  bought 6 boxes ;D I did exactly like instructions said and put them under my bed..(only place available at the time)..and I had mushrooms coming out of 'my ear holes' ;D
I've had ago with logs several times..and not much to tell..got only a taster ::)
Last year I had another try..again...so far nothing...logs are covered with 'growth' but no fruiting bodies.
This spring I did enormous blueberry planter..fetched some pine needles from forrest to finish the surface off..and for my suprise I've had several 'blue buttons' popping up..
But yes ..it is a bit hit and miss..luckily I have access for free logs etc. cost of failure is not too bad.
