Title: calla lilly
Post by: Sparkly on October 24, 2010, 20:19:27
I planted some calla lillies in a flowerbed on the plot. Could I get away with leaving these in over the winter if I cover with a thick layer of straw? (I just don't have a good history with digging up tubers and storing them over winter - they always seem to rot!) Are they likely to be in flower for the end of July? I was hoping to use these in my bridal bouquet?

Some are supposed to be hardy, but I expect you were seduced into buying something unusual from a supermarket and these type are basically pot plants and need to be indoors. Just dig them up, clean them off and store in a paper small bag of clean dry peat based compost. Plant them early next year in a pot indoors then place in the garden when it is warmer. I had some exotics from a reputable dealer, his advice on all calla lillies was to let the flowers and foliage die back to the ground to ensure next years blooms. Like you would daffs.

The variety is 'naomi'. Thanks Ace. I will dig them up when they have died back :)
