What is the biggest mushroom/toadstall in the UK?
I have found a large one that is your typical mushroom shape.
Stem is about 3" thick and cap is about 9" at a quick guess
tan to orangey colour.
Has it got gills?

;D ;D
What Ollie was asking was what the underside looks like - is it a solid pimply mass like you'd get with a penny bun, or does it have gills, like the cooling fins on a car radiator, like a horse mushroom has.
Ha, yes accidental joke there... Often the biggies you see are pore types - overgrown Ceps or something similar. There are some huge fungi around here this year, appearing after the very heavy rain a couple of weeks ago. On a walk last week we found Fly Agaric around 10 inches across and the Russula were twice their normal size.
Quick tip for anyone interested in simple fungal foraging - with the downpour 2 nights ago & low temperatures, I'm betting on a good Blewit haul this week. A great tasting mushroom that is near impossible to confuse with anything else.
Thanks for replies, I didnt get that close to it as it was well in the brambles where I stopped for a pee!
I had never seen a mushroom that big before so didnt know if it was a freak of nature.
Sound like theone that goes blue when you break it. bollette I think
