Title: Red/Black and white currants
Post by: Learner Gardener on December 24, 2004, 17:20:24
I have inherited some red, black and white current bushes. They are all now missing their leaves due to the time of year. I am aware that there are slight differences in pruning them. Can anyone suggest a way to identify which are which so that I prune the correct types properly

DNA testing?
Seriously though, I went and looked at ours and there is no difference that I can see between any of them at this time of year, except in the way they have been pruned. Thinking back on the way they are in leaf, I reckon you would have trouble before they produce their fruit. Good news is that you do not really need to prune any of them. Red and  White just need minimal pruning at the best of times and Black can stand a year without coming to any great harm.
