Title: Flower/weed ID please?
Post by: Grandma on October 17, 2010, 16:22:51
Several of these yellow-flowered plants have arrived in the garden this year. The one in the photo is about 3' tall and the same wide. The individual flowers are approx. 1.5 to 1.75'' across and look a bit like tiny sunflowers.

(Should have taken the snap a while ago - it's well past it's best today!)

I'm wondering if it's something from the bird seed I put in my feeders? It's pretty - but I'll get rid of it before it seeds if it's going to grow everywhere! Any ideas, please?

Coreopsis, I think, and yes it is a favourite for bird seed. It looks lovely, I'd let it seed and then weed out unwanteds....

I'd let it seed and then grow everywhere and then get moaned at for letting them grow everywhere........

Better to collect the seed and sow it in the right place but where's the fun in that?

I think this is the result of 'Niger seed' droping down from your bird feeders.  I think Niger plants are 'half hardy' and will  thus die off in the frosts - depends on whether you like everything 'tidy' or welcome self sown plants (I welcome self sown plants) but I don't think this will seed but if you still have bird feeders in the area you may get them again next year.

Thanks all!

;D ;D ;D at gpgirl!

Yes - I love to see what just 'arrives' in the garden. If it's not an obvious weed I give it a chance. I will just leave them and see what happens - if they do set seed maybe the goldfinches will enjoy them!

Thanks again.

I've got some flowering too Grandma  ;D and very pretty they are too. Self-sown from the bird feeder along with some very intresting looking grasses and maybe a millet and some oats!

Yes, Jayb - I had wheat, oats, barley and a millety-looking thing; they all looked nice, picked green, in with cut flowers!

There was a hard frost here on Wednesday night/Thursday morning and the big yellow-flowered job has collapsed completely - so it doesn't look as if it's going to be a problem self-seeder.

I've got that plant too at the front of my plot (came in a 29p mixed flower seed packet from Lidl). It's very pretty and has outlasted most of the other flowers, plants too. It survived the recent frost we had which killed off the cosmos although I still have few cornflowers and poppies and amazingly, sweet peas.
