Title: garden design sort of question
Post by: grawrc on October 13, 2010, 10:07:02
There is an area in my garden between my house and my neighbour's which I am intending to replant maybe in a mini parterre sort of style. I'd also like some climbers/ wall shrubs. It faces NW and is 26 feet long by 9 feet wide approximately.

It is sort of like a rectangle open at the NW where it joins the main area of the garden. The main part of my house is at the SE end and there is a door leading in to the dining room there. On the left is the wall of the house. On the right is a fence then my neighbour's garden which mirrors mine.
What I had in mind was something like the attachment but I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for planting in this area which doesn't get a huge amount of sunlight - especially at the SE end.

How about beautifully flowering crab apple..and later on underplanting it with something suitable..shortish climber..you could get some interest all year round.

Gosh thank you! What brilliant ideas. Chris you made me smile - I had half thought of putting this in edibles too!

I'll need to read up about crab apples and morellos and see how much space they need. I know you can get dwarf crab apples which could be quite striking underplanted with a variety of bulbs and some of Den's suggestions but I'll need to think about proximity to the house etc too.   Each of those green triangles in the plan has 2 sides 3 feet long so the beds aren't huge but then there's plenty of "root space" where I won't be planting and intend to have "hard landscaping".

Ooh! I do love planning gardens. Just wait till I get on to the main bit!
