My friend's central heating boiler had a problem so she phoned the manufacturer (it's 1 year old and has a 5 year guarantee)
They told her that she would have to give her credit card details over the phone because if they came out and it was not a manufacturer's fault, she would be charged.
This doesn't seem right to me. Anyone else heard of it?
(The boiler is made by Ferroli)
I would have contacted the retail supplier/installer first.
No way would I give the my CC details up front.
Does she know exactly what's wrong with the boiler?
I never pay up front........they do the job, then you pay them.

The installer told her to contact the manufacturer. ::)
The heating works but there is no hot water.

That's what I told her. It seems pointless having a guarantee if this is what happens.
IMHO the installers are the ones who should be looking at it.
We have an extremely good old fashioned local company who installed my boiler and when it went wrong I went to them and they went to the the company as they were the ones who bought it for us.
They also refused to take any money upfront and just said they would pop round when we were completly happy with it!
So no do not pay upfront!
It is a very long time since i bought a new applianace but back then, some of these manufacturers warranties weren't worth very much. For instance, they covered parts but not labour and were dependant upon purchasing a maintance contract.
Is it a combi boiler? Modern boilers have a boiler equivalent of an ECU and sometimes show a fault code on a display panel. You have to get the book out to understand what it means. And sometimes it's wrong. Or you could just just turn it all off and try to start it up again. That might reset it.
I would get a plumber in tbh and find out exactly what's wrong in the first instance. It might just be a valve sticking or something. Sorry this is not much help. But I think your friend may need the opinion of a CORGI-type plumber who has looked at the boiler. Must admit, I have never put much faith in extended warranties.
betty, get the installers to deal with it, after all, they were the original purchaser!!
by the way, the 'corgi' scheme no longer operates, it's now called 'gas safe'
Thanks for the replies, I'll pass them on to my friend.
I think I would be contacting Trading Standards. They would be able to tell your friend their legal rights.
When suppliers start telling people to contact the manufacturer, the answer should be 'no, I bought it from you, and its your problem. I'm not doing your work for you.'

Squash64, I note you live in Perry Barr'
Don't you ever listen to Ed Doolan on Radio WM ??? ???M. (95.6FM)
He has sorted out soo many WM listeners problems, and it is bacically where I have learned my consumer law.
The suppliers will try to take the easy way out, and refer you to the manufacturer. NO! NO! NO!
Your first port of call is the supplier. If they start mucking you about with crap about manufacturers, tell them as I said earlier, refuse to do their work for them.
valmarg
P.S, If your friend does hit a brick wall, try ringing the programme. As alistener I have found them very helpful.

Thanks Valmarg.
I had forgotten about Ed Doolan - I don't listen to him because I am at the allotment every morning when he is on air. I used to hear him in the past and I know he was very good at sorting problems like this out. I'll tell my friend.
Get on to Watchdog too, there maybe loads of people with this problem.

Mmm sounds to me your sump in outlet conversion box is shoving on your secondary thermostat which in turn is pressing on gaffer tape that holds the bulb that lets you know if its working or not....... "a simple enough job but with the six other jobs I've got on the go,and time waisted waiting for new parts i mean ya do wont the gaffer tape the same colour i hope, then theres the sitting in me van for an hour when i arrive to eat me sausage cob and read the sport, then theres the countless mugs a tea your going to keep me going then theres labor and that's not cheap ma duck...so i hope ya do the lottery.
:o who deleted that mans post ???
Search the web for the fault . some good plumbing sites for advice. Not suggesting you can do it yourself, but this can suggest if its a known problem with that boiler (most are) , The guarantor should respond to your call without any conditions, ask trading standards. Boilers are not rocket science .
We had a new boiler put in a few years ago and we've had problem after problem with it. Now after lots of research we now find we should have installed one of the German ones. However condensing boilers were not required at that point and there were not many reviews. Now the central heating engineer who installed it doesn't answer our calls, we think after the last problem....no heating from boxing day to the end of February when he assumed it was the same part had broken again so he didn't call round and just ordered the part. We waited for the part and waited then he drove to get it rather than wait any longer when he came he found it was a blocked pipe requiring a section to be cut out and replaced. He was very embarrassed, now we've had to find someone else as he doesn't answer our calls.

Yes, who did, and why?
I didn't have time to read it all this morning before I went out but from the bit I did read it sounded as though he knew his stuff.
It didn't seem that he was advertising anything, so why was it deleted?
???
May be some old boiler complained..... ;D
