Title: Cauliflower (or is it) novice question?
Post by: earlypea on September 26, 2010, 15:54:22
I've got a big purple head on one of my Violet Queens and ought to pick it.

Should I pull the whole plant to give the rest of the brassicas more space or does it sprout again - I'm slightly confused because it's described as somewhere between a cauli and broccoli but they might mean in terms of taste not growth.

Thanks....

It depends on whether the other brassicas need the space.
If they can do fine with the space you gave them, I would cut the head from the main stem and let the plant sprout again.
Most brassicas sprout again, not only cauliflowers and brocolis, but also the ones that form heads. They just make leaves or button sized loose leaved heads.

Thanks for replying Garjan  :)

In fact they weren't too special, roundabout the same as supermarket green broccoli heads but fresher obviously, so I pulled half of them up to make room for more interesting brassicas to grow as big as possible.  I'll wait and see what the remaining ones decide to do  8)
