I have just bought a very old second hand Merry Tiller. It seens to run OK but when I speed up the engine the tines dont seem to rotate any faster. Is this normal? If not what do you think the problem could be?
Check the gearbox grease level by removing the cover located on the back of the gearbox. Check that the level reaches the lip of the transmission with the gearbox tilted at a 45-degree angle. Always fill the gearbox with the engine and guard attached and only use Mantis lithium grease.
It may be causing the worm drive to slip if there is no grease or it has gone hard.
Ive never heard of a worm drive slipping, thats the whole point of gearing. If it slips, its broken. If its a merry tiller of this pattern:

then its more likely the belt is slipping because its old and stretched.
yer i was thinking mantis :-[ :-[ :-[
As has already been said, check your drive belt. If its not in too bad a condition it can be adjusted. If it needs replacing make sure you get a decent rubber belt, i replaced mine with a cloth covered one which lasted no time at all. Also check to see if the spring near the drive lever is ok. Too much slack and it wont tighten the belt enough to drive the blades properly, again this can be adjusted or replaced.
