Any suggestions for dealing with a glut of spring onions - do they store well?
Cheers!
have you picked them yet? if not, they store well in the ground so you can use as required...
No, not yet - picking as needed up to now but must have got carried away early Summer with the planting. I did stagger them but haven't been able to keep up.
youve done well then! i always find them tricky to get going. I have left them in the ground for ages and ages so youll be ok,they are like leeks in that they just sit there his time of year
Thanks a lot. It was following some advice on a thread here about sowing 6 to a cell and planting the whole plug that worked (too) well for me.
Well done ~ its great that it worked for you. I might try the plug method next year :)
Duke
Yeah I followed the same advice and it worked well for me too..
I hope Im not wrong but I think it was Chriscross66 who suggested it - I am going to try it with some overwintered onions as well..

Me too, it's the first time i've managed to grow spring onions and my kids love them
yup another one who picked up on that tip - it might have been Tim, but I'm not sure :)
I have a few in the ground, and they are still looking good
Re the other great tip I got on here - about picking the 1st fruit to form on cucumber plants, to let the plant grow etc. Now that was a top tip, and I'm still eating cucumbers :D

Oops.... sorry...... ;D
I accidentally stored some - it was just the tiny white bulb, they got lost in among some other onions and were fine months later!
I leave them in the ground until I want them, as long as they don't run to seed, they'll be happy to stay in the ground all winter.
