Title: Bean slicers
Post by: grannyjanny on September 12, 2010, 10:50:49
Has anyone any experience of the kitchen craft bean slicer. I am aware another has been recommended but OH likes his beans in small slices. The other answer would be for him to do his own ;D.

We used to have a little plastic square thing with a metal grill inside  It had a secondary benefit becuase you know if the bean would not pass through the grill is was too tough and old and needed throwing in the compost.

B ut now I pick the beans younger and cut them up the middle with scissorts and no long strip the sides.

I've got one either the same or very similar to this one http://www.kitchencraft.co.uk/catalogue/detail.aspx?pid=26829&gid=32416&pg=icDBRleWcpYfW%2fTGT2PYEw%3d%3d I didn't like it very much at first, because I'm very fussy how my beans are sliced and it was cutting them a little short and blocky for me. Which seems to alter the taste and how they cook.

I also bought a second hand Spong and Co 103 which is fab and was only a few £ on ebay. I remember sitting with my granny when I was little slicing beans so it was also like buying a bit of my history.

I've since gently altered the angle of the blades on the kitchen Craft type one  and it works much better, very happy with it. Suction is good, easy to use and easy to take apart and clean.

Thanks Jayb, that's the one. OH likes his beans sliced very small 1/2'' or less. How does it do them please?

LH side Kitchen Kraft, slightly shorter in length than RH side Spong and Co, which is my favourite of the two :)

Thanks Digeroo, not fine enough though. Jayb the thinner ones should be OK for fussy pants. Better get it ordered so I can make some chutney too.
