Hi All, :)
Seasons greetings to each & every one of you :D Thinking ahead to next year I am going to try growing borlotti beans to use as dried beans in soups & stews. My query is do I pick any of the beans early on ??? With ordinary beans, as I understand it,if you do not pick them they stop flowering & therefore stop producing. What is the recommended method for borlotti when I need to leave the pods on the plant to dry.
Thanks for any advice
Adrian.
That`s a good point-I always leave them to dry on the plant. But if one picked off the early ones would that encourage a heavier crop?

I think it depends how you want to use the beans:
For fresh beans: pick before pods turn red
For storage beans: pick after completely ripe and pots begin to dry (55-70 days)
I pick borlotti beans fresh the amount I
can use immediately and the plant keeps producing but most of the beans I keep to dry. In this way I have every year lots and lost of borlotti beans.
hi, I'm new to this site and to allotments ..so I'm just learning.....I love borlotti beans and have been looking for somewhere to buy the seeds ...please can you let me have the name and address of the seed company that sells them, thanks
You can get them from Kings Seeds, available from most Garden Centres. I love borlotti Beans too!
I eat stacks of beans. Well usually cans of them. So next year (almost this year now!) I'm trying a couple of drying beans. Both are from the Heritage Seed Library - one's called Birds Egg (French Bean) - supposed to be like butter beans - and the other is a pea called Latvian which are said to taste like chick peas.
Can't wait to see how they go!
the organic catalogue have about 6 different beans for drying too.
Sarah.
Diver,
Most of the suppliers on the vegetable page of http://www.plant-seed-mailorder.org.uk with online ordering offer them - you should search under Barlotta
Garden centres tend to have them now

I planted Borlotti beans 'cos the pods were a nice colour! Picked them as runners and ate pods and all. Left some and am so glad I did. Dried them as recommended then soaked overnight and boiled with our own tomato gloop. Gently simmered with 'an assortment' of sausages and it was warming and wonderfull. >:(
