Title: Easy green tomato chutney recipe urgently needed!
Post by: gypsy on September 06, 2010, 18:29:38
Well, the blight has found my outdoor  tomatoes, anyone got a very easy recipe?
Have got about 15 pounds of mostly green tomatoes, and plenty of onions and courgettes.
I can't remember what to do with them.

Google green tomato recipes - you'll find plenty.  Make choc courgette cake but substitute green tomatoes for courgettes.  Make soup, curry - you can use them all. Peanuts

Gypsy,

I tried the following last year, I will do it again this year.

PICKLED GREEN TOMATOES.

Half pint White wine vinegar or malt vinegar.
2 Lbs (900g) granulated sugar.
1 Level teaspoon ground cinnamon.
1 Level teaspoon cumin seeds.
3 Lbs (1.5kg) smallish green tomatoes. Skinned.

Put vinegar, sugar, spices and  quarter pint (150mls) water into large pan, heat gently, stirring until sugar has dissolved, then bring to boil. Add the tomatoes and simmer very gently for 5 mins. Spoon the tomatoes into a large Bowl and pour vinegar syrup over. Cover and leave  to cool overnight.. Strain the syrup into a large pan and boil for 10mins. Pack the tomatoes in sterilised jars and pour in syrup right up to the top. The syrup will be thick but, in storeage, it will thin down. Cover and seal while hot,. Serve with cold meats or cheese.

The pickled green tomatoes last for ages (more than a year) my one fault with this recipe is that I would use less sugar as it is a little sweet with 2lb of sugar. I will use garlic this year and you can incorporate other spices. Chillies might work. Needs experimenting with.

Thanks Peanuts. I tried but I need very very simple instructions. Also I don't cook much, so do not have all the spices, etc., don't want to buy things to use once a year. Most recipes have a lot of different ingredients.

Queenbee, thanks. I will have a try. Have got loads of green tomatoes, and the recipe is just what I need.

 east green tom chutney

Prep: 20 min

Cook: 1 hr

Ingredients:

500g green tomatoes
500g  red onion
250g sultanas
250g brown sugar
2 tbsp Salt
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp ground green cardamom
500ml Malt vinegar
Method:

Chop everything up, no need for a perfection, and put it in a good heavy based pan .

Bring it to the boil and then turn down the heat , simmer for about an hour until reduced to a thick pulp.

Spoon into sterilised jars and enjoy either after standing for a while to let flavours develop or if you are a little glutton like myself grab the cheese and crackers and go watch TV .

Brownoiwl23 I will be trying your chutney, such a shame to throw out green tomatoes when you can make such easy pickles.

PUt them in a bowl with a ripe-ish banana. Change banana every few dyas as it becomes on the point of too ripe to eat.... Tomatoes will ripen up quickly enough... and you get to eat the odd banana..... works with other ripe fruit too but seems easiest with banana.... or get a welder to stick some acetylene in a ballon for you , put toms in biggish bag with some are in it and squirt in a bit of the acetylene, refresh the bag every few days ...

I just used Brown owl's chutney recipe and did 4 times the amounts. It made 18 jars! Yummy!  I was dreading the blight, but harvested the green tomatoes in good time. So glad they were not wasted. Thanks Brown owl!

My OH made green tomato chutney for the 1st time a week or so ago and it is gorgeous, we have been eating it with everything, it is definitely worth a go as it is such a shame to waste the green tomatoes.   I'm afraid I don't have the recipe to hand to post.
