Title: Overloaded pear tree
Post by: Borlotti on September 05, 2010, 11:41:38
Margaret had to give up her plot and this is a picture of her two pear trees, most of the pears drop on my allotment and they are ready now. Picture 006.  The big pear tree behind are not ready yet but are dropping off.  No-one had taken this plot on probably because of the trees, as her plot has been split into three and the end one just the two trees and a lot of weeds.  My Conference pear tree is overloaded this year and the branches can't support the weight so picked some picture 004 and 009, not sure if they will ripen up at home as they are still very hard, but they seem to sell them like that in the shops. Also the tree in the picture next to my pear tree doesn't flower or do anything.  Will give it another year to see if anything happens.  Question is should I pick some more pears from my tree to store, or wait a bit longer.  Seems to be a good year for pears as last year my tree only had about 3 on it.

Wow - fantastic.

I expect they will ripen - like you say they sell them hard in the shops.

I am picking them as needed a week in the bowl and they are ripe. Don't pick too many if you can help it as they will all ripen and spoil before you can eat them. Pear crumble again tonight :(

Enjoy your pear crumble tonight.  This is the picture with the tree next to it, the other one didn't show it, do you think it is plum??? Certainly no plums on it.

We stew our pears in cheap red wine and freeze for Winter consumption. Make a sugar syrup 1/4 pt of water to 4 oz of sugar Boil for 3 mins. Add 1/4 pt red wine. Slice pears into halves or quarters and cook until soft. Then pack into boxes and freeze.

Sounds like a plan to me, do you think it would work with white wine?
