Title: Grape Vine: Pot or Ground
Post by: Digitalis on September 04, 2010, 16:24:27
I've just bought a grape vine and am pondering whether to put it in a large pot full of compost in my garden or in the ground on my allotment......

Which do you recommend for the best/quickest crop?

I have space for it on the allotment, but it cost me a fair bit of wedge. If for some reason I have to give up my plot I wouldn't want to leave it behind.

Someone said that compost is too 'good' for grae vines? On that basis would it be ok to put some garden soil in a 50 litre pot to grow it in?

I have two vines at the moment, 1 is in a pot (15litre) and the other I have put in the ground. The one in the pot is in my greenhouse and it is not very big say 8ft and has 4 bunches of grapes on. It was a task this Summer keeping the pot moist to say the least. You would have more luck in a 50litre tub but I would suggest may be put it in the ground.

If you want one at the allotment and at home. I would suggest layer a shoot now from your plant to grow a new plant for next year and then have one at home and one at the allotment. doesnt matter then if you lose the allotment .

to layer a cutting. just get a pot, fill with soil and put the shoot firmly in their. by next year it should have rooted and can be removed from the Mother plant.
