Post by: asj on August 28, 2010, 18:28:13
Did anybody else get a weird screen this afternoon warning of viruses and other nasty things when accessing A4A?

Hi,

I have installed new software today to prevent spambots and spammers from accessing Allotments4All, I guess you saw a screen and were asked to answer 2 questions?

It is nothing to worry about, it just means that other computers accessing the internet from your ISP are sending spam.

Hopefully that makes sense.  Sadly it is a constant battle between website admins and spammers :(

Yes - no probs, except it prompted me to notice that the icon for my very up-to-date Norton Antivirus had disappeared.  I have just spent 1½ hours on line with a delightful gentleman in South India who uninstalled the Norton and then installed an even more up-to-date version for me!!

the last time I called a nice Indian chap regarding a computer problem, as soon as he realised it wasn't trivial, he told me to hang up the phone and called me back

My Indian gentleman was nicer than yours   :)

If I get any problem with the computer, I just phone, or shout for, a very nice English man  ;D  . I'm sure there are lots of lovely Indian men, but I use resources far far closer to home.   It does cost me (sweetcorn, tomatoes, chutney...) but he's worth it!  ::)

I too use a local chap, (mate).  A cup of tea and a slice of one of  tracie's home-made cake is usually sufficient payment!

I just swear a bit, pull at my now very thin hair, and then if it isn't working in a couple of days threaten to buy a new one.  ;D ;D
Then when I check the prices of a replacement I go back to the problem and somehow work out what I did wrong in the first place.  ::) ;)

I use one cheap second hand computer for the internet and a decent one for everything else which I can easily connect or transfer from the £60 second hand load of squit. It means that if I get sugared. I can just go to the shop and get another. Loose nothing and the repair bills, well I have only had it happen once in 20 years on line.

Yes I do have Macafee as well, but can use the same cover for several computers. (In the family we can share it, friends too) I don't think people realise that they can share an antivirus and if they did sort it out between themselves, they could very likely save a fair bit of money.

As for phoning India. I would turn off and on again first. If ever any one gets a funny message when on the internet. It is the best thing to do as a test.

Never panic.

I remember years ago when googling something, I got a link which said.

Want to see a horse fookin a human?

Well I was conned and every thing went down.. I shut up shop and then re-started.

My antivirus told me that it had just stopped a trojan horse.

That was the horse and I was the human target to be fooked.

By the way I deliberately mispelt the words fooked, squit and sugared because I am aware there are a lot of  weird people who accept all sorts of horrible things, take offence by the use of certain words.

Macafee have tested sites which are there with a tick sign but personally, I don't care. Don't need to.

I got the warning screen in English and Spanish this afternoon and was unable to access A4All for some hours. How can I get rid of it if it happens again? I didn't dare click on anything in case I let a virus in  :-\.

There's nothing you can do but wait until forum admin have blocked the spammer then everything should go back to normal. Never click on anything you don't understand or havn't asked for :)
